I realize there are tons of postings about this. I just want to know what the final verdict is.

I am going to be out of the country when this happens, and need to figure out what device I have to take with me, and I prefer taking a BB10.

PLEASE CONFIRM: Using android WhatsApp will work after Dec 31st? Only issue being no images/media can be sent..... Is this correct?

Android WhatsApp won't work either. According to da_koningsberg, the BB10 WA dev, WA servers will block connections coming from BB10, no matter which client you use.

Just like other big name apps will start doing in hopes to convert the BlackBerry 10 users and "force" them to switch.

I saw a post with a link to a patch that is suppose to fix the media issue with the Android version on BB10.

At this point no one really knows if WhatApp will work on BB10 after December 31. Someone who works for WhatsApp first posted a message saying that WhatsApp wouldn't allow server connection from any BB10 device after Dec. 31, then later retracted that statement.

For the record, here's what WhatsApp says:
As announced in our blog, WhatsApp will no longer be supported on BlackBerry 10 by the end of 2016.
Until then, we support any BlackBerry 10 device that has Software Release 10.0.10.82 or later, otherwise known as BB OS Version 10.0.10.648.

You're going have to source 'no matter which client you use.' AFAIK da_koningsberg never said that about Android WA on BB10 just that it won't be supported meaning its YMMV and don't bother them about any issues.

We can wish and speculate all we want at this point, but if WhatsApp is going to kill a fully functioning version of BB10, why would they still allow a partially functioning Android version to connect to their servers from BB10 after that date?

Same reason Facebook isn't blocking an Android client even though they and BB10 are done.

Because the Android WhatsApp can only be downloaded unofficially ie ( cobalt GPS or Snap) there was no need for WhatsApp to make an official statement about it and they definitely don't care if you have problems with it.

Isn't using the apk Watsapp on a BlackBerry 10 device the same thing like using Watsapp from an Android 4.3 device?

But they might care when your WhatsApp contacts complain to WhatsApp about it not working properly for them.

The android Apk works absolutely fine
As a matter of fact you can upload pictures from your device memory but not from your SD card
Also you can just download the APK from WhatsApp's website
Just tried it the other day, no issues whatsoever
Ofcourse there is a solution to the media card photos as well I believe, a certain app called WAA fixer which you will need to sideload
    Hope this helps!

The Android version will work after 31 of December because the Android version will still receive support for Android 4.3.
I am not a Whatsapp user and I don't think I will ever be.

After December 31st 2016, Whatsapp will cease to work on all BB10 device, irrespective of what app / method you use to try and access their service.

Only option (if you still require Whatsapp) is to switch to another supported device.

It's a shame that whatsapp are treating the blackberry users this way, but it makes way for newer and better messaging apps to come in. I will keep the crapdriod version around but I mainly use BBM and SMS anyway.

Actually there is nothing much WhatsApp can do
The kind of features they want to add, BlackBerry doesn't offer the required APIs since they haven't really updated it in a long time so WhatsApp had to drop support since they want to maintain feature parity across platforms

The Android version will work. The only way it will not work is if it will require the Google services and even in that case maybe it will be possible to patch it.
So once again the Android version will work as long as we have the ART.
