I don't get the flat icon appeal.
The new BlackBerry World icon looks like something from Windows 98.
Is there a deeper reasoning behind this?

I think you mean getting out of the Vista era and into 1994. Good try though.

I hope it goes more windows phone than iOS. Flat is one thing, but iOS is something else.

Dude...you're gripe is late to the party. there's been numerous threads about it.

I don't really mind it. I just want an functioning and efficient device, flat UI or not.

But to use my technical expertise, flat UI loads quicker. The graphs are lighter, I'm talking potentially almost less than 1kb per icon. It may not seem significant but those KBs add up, turning into MBs, then GBs. So take that logic into the entire OS UI, the graphic interface would be lighter. The smaller you can make the graphics, the more room you can set aside for cooler features such as enhanced video editing or panoramic camera. Or the ability to beef up the voice recognition ability. And lastly, less stress on the battery during processing to ensure faster app loading.

All in all, going flat is actually less about design and style, and more about getting the most out of a small device without going bonkers on internal hardware. More power under the hood equals a bigger device, hence the Note or even closer to home, the Z30.
