Would this be the best kept secret, or the worst marketing skills?

Next question: Does the NSA know?

The NSA always knew, about everything.

I have no idea why people are doubting this.

Though Apple says all those fingerprints aren't stored anywhere but the phone but a NSA backdoor could be slithering around...

If we had fingerprint scanners before apple we would have sold millions of phones. Too late now

I remember reading a post on CB a year or two before mentioning some new ideas for bb10 devices. One of their suggestions was to include finger scanner, guess who applied it first.
Finger scanner isn't a big deal for me but it would have shown some innovative approach and it aligns with BlackBerry's thme of security.

It wasn't really hacked, it was bypassed or fooled via a somewhat complex manual process. Bad journalism. The term hacked should denote a software only disabling or alteration of the functionality

I personally think that maybe, the reason that bb doesn't want the system to be rooted is because they have a deal with NSA that they provide fingerprints without it being publicised and nsa talks about their good security.

I think if any other device was to have this first, apple users would say how silly it is. Because they have it, they'll say it's the best.

It's perfectly possible for the scanner not to record any data that's of any use except to the one phone the finger is scanned on.

Scanning software generates a random 30+ digit number first time it's used or after a hard reset/phone wipe.
Scan of fingerprint generates a similarly large number the 2 numbers are hashed together to create a third number. Finger required to generate 2nd number, First number only accessible with 2nd. First and 2nd required to create 3rd, 3rd required to join unlock phone.
Think it can work something like that.

To give more confidence: another small number or password can be added into the algorithms, along with the principles of something you know, something you have...

How Apple do It I have know idea?

Then it would be considered a feature instead of a gimmick.

I think it's great for people who have no need for top secret security and just want an easy way to lock people out and unlock their phone. Let's face it if the NSA wants info on you they are going to get it.

They are an essential service. They are working, just working for free till Congress funds the government.

The trackpad on BB7 devices uses a little optical sensor, so theoretically it could've been collection fingerprints.

If someone had to steal my phone, then use thousands of dollars in equipment to bypass the scanner, then all power to them.
