My understanding is that the upgrade is free and lasts forever but you have to install it within a year. In other words, if you don't upgrade in a year, you will have to pay.

    That's my understanding too.

This is cool. I would also add that Windows 10 may also have the instant replies too!

I really do think this is going to give WP the bump it needs. One OS, across phone, tablet, and laptop. We've yet to see how the execution will be with apps, but to me this looks like the move that shifts WP from fringe to mainstream mobile platform.

Microsoft has fumbled a few times, with Windows 8, and the transition from WP 7.5 to WP 8, but they do have a pretty clear vision of where they're going, and it appears to be coming to fruition with Windows/WP 10.

I've been told Windows 10 is bad on a tablet because it doesn't even have the basic swiping features of Windows 8.1

Microsoft previews do not include all features. The purpose may be merely to weed out bugs and test for program compatibility. I believe the early previews were just for desktop/keyboard.

Yeah, it usually takes them several iterations to get it right, or at least acceptable. Remember Word 1.0 or Windows 286? * shudder*

WP8.1's multitasking looks exactly like a portrait PlayBook with open apps, so I am REALLY not surprised.
