    Hi,

It's Vinnie from RadioFeeds UK & Ireland here.

As some of you may be aware, we operate a service for BB10 users to allow them to listen to UK and Irish radio app-free. UK and Irish Radio Stations for BlackBerry 10 - RadioFeeds UK & Ireland

Recently, the BBC introduced some high-quality streams using the HLS protocol.
Whilst BB10 should support this, I'm not sure if it works on the app-free player, as the playlist files have been left unparsed.

As I don't own a BB10 device, please could someone test some streams out for me..
Just load this into your browser: RadioFeeds UK & Ireland for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad
Select a station, choose a bitrate, then press play. Let me know if anything is heard.
If you're not from the UK, you may find that the 128k and 320k streams will not work, as they are geolocked.

    Thanks in advance.

Just tested radio Newcastle radio 2 and radio Essex. All working exceptionally well on all bitrates. Running a Q10 on EE 4G in Birmingham.

Thanks, guys. Glad you're enjoying using the player.
Sorry for not being too clear in my first post: what I'd really like to test is the AAC (HLS) mode.
This is given in the second link.
Please could you test those streams for me, ensuring you don't accidentally switch away to mp3 mode.

    Thanks!

Just to clarify, did the 320k stream work for you?

    Excellent! Thanks for the confirmation.
I've now integrated the HLS player into the BB10 player.
Not only is the sound quality higher with the 128k and 320k streams, but live sports commentary is not blocked on those two streams (UK only).

"PLEASE NOTE: The 128k and 320k BBC AAC+ (HLS) streams are only available to listeners in the UK, but live sports commentary is available on these streams."

In the US, some of the HLS streams are deemed incompatible.

The 48k and 96k streams should work to those streaming from outside of the UK. Is this the case for you?

Thanks for supporting BB10. I'm in Canada and all our major networks seem to think supporting BB10 is a colosal waste of time.

Not Apple directly, but through another developer, yes.
Shall I start charging users to access the player so I can build up funds to buy myself a BlackBerry Classic?
Nah.. I'll just continue letting people enjoy it for free!

    Hey Vinnie,

It's Patrick from Calgary by the sunny snow-covered Rocky Mountains.

I'll happily donate a tip to you: the player works fine using the stock BB10 browser, but if the user sets the Browser's settings to "Desktop Mode", your player doesn't work. It just displays an error message:

    Attachment 334201

Maybe the simplest fix would be for you to include an extra paragraph on this error screen along the lines of the following: BB10 users that see this message should go into the browser Settings / Developer Tools / Desktop Mode and make sure it is set to the "Off" position.

    Thanks Vinnie!

Yes. I just posted the warning so that people know it isn't an issue with the phone or website.

It does work now. Thanks for the iinfo.

But will it work from outside UK? Can I listen to the live commentary when the game is on? Or will I get the standard message saying it's not available outside UK due to contract restrictions?

I already checked. It doesn't work for live commentary if you're outside UK.
I tried 5livesportsextrs just now where it's supposed to play the world cup cricket highlights - bit I get the rights restrictions message
I really would like to listen on my BlackBerry
Since BlackBerry doesn't t support pptp von, I can't get this working no matter what!!

There are a few ipsec VPNs. (BTW PPTP can be cracked.) You can search Crackberry for how to do this since I have no first hand knowledge.

Some people have set up Amazon cloud accounts and made their own VPN. Note for streaming, you need to look at the data caps.

Amazon has a trial account for their cloud. (On my TBD list. )
