What do you need to know?
With the new BlackBerry Protect Anti-Theft feature there is the potential for a device to get in an unusable state where enterprises are to swapping a device from one user to another. This will occur:
If a device has been wiped from a BES Administrator command (wipe device), from BlackBerry Link or by entering the Password incorrectly 10 times and the BBID of the device owner is not known (while BlackBerry Protect Anti-theft enabled is enabled). Then even after the Wipe the next user will be prompted for the BlackBerry ID that was previously used.
Workaround: If a user wipes their own device with BlackBerry protect Anti-theft enabled they will be prompted for their BBID password. Once entered the device will be wiped and the user will be logged out meaning the device could be passed onto another user (or sold on in the case of a consumer device).
What Controls/Process options are available ?
1) Ensure in a Smartphone swap scenario that BlackBerry Protect is turned off or the owner of the device performs the wipe themselves entering their BlackBerry ID password (meaning they will be logged out and someone else can use the device)
2) If using a Gold License in either Work space only, Work and personal Regulated activation modes - BlackBerry Protect can be controlled (allowed or disallowed) by an administrator using a BES IT Policy (details in the second article above)
When is BlackBerry 10 OS 10.3.2 releasing?
Release planned in Germany and Europe in mid-July
Note: IT Policy and controls are available in both BES 10 and BES 12 to Block device OTA updates for customers using Gold License (in either Work space only, Work and personal Regulated activation modes). This can be used for customers who wish to review the updates prior to allowing their user base to upgrade.
Why is BlackBerry making this change?
This change adds an extra layer of consumer protection this is a requirement for US consumer protection legislation (expected to follow in UK, Europe and the rest of the World). Other Smartphone providers have similar controls in place.
