I tried to buy a BlackBerry leap from kijiji. When I checked the phone out, it was asking me to setup from the beginning. I put my sim card and it activated then it was asking me to put in my BlackBerry ID to sign in. The screen said the BlackBerry anti theft protection protection is on and I'd to login using using my bbid

I thought you could skip this step and set up the phone as normal.

Was I dealing with a stolen phone?? I didn't buy it as I became worried about being a stolen phone.

I wonder if the previous owner was to turn off BlackBerry Protect prior to wiping and selling it. Maybe someone else can concur...

That's what I've heard in other threads. They have to sign back in and turn of BlackBerry Protect...and remove the device from the BlackBerry Protect website.

    So I could've bought this?
Could it be a legit phone?

It's most likely legit, but the person was unaware that they had to turn off BlackBerry Protect prior to doing a security wipe.

Contact the seller. He will have to enter his BlackBerry ID. If he doesn't know it, he's a thief.

I asked him for the BlackBerry ID when I met him
He says he doesn't know as he bought it off someone else. So I assumed its a stolen phone and hence didn't buy it

Unfortunately you now own a new paperweight. You can't circumvent this.

Since it asked me to login using my bbid, I assume it would've just worked. But I wasn't comfortable buying a stolen phone so I didn't even try to use my id.
Just told him to get the anti theft turned off.
