when using BB 7.1, you can separate lines on an SMS by using soft returns.

how do you do it with a Z10 or Q10 running BlackBerry 10.1?

thanks for the response and welcome.

when I do alt+enter, a dialog box appears and I usually cancel it.

this time though I went through it and the next time I did alt+enter, it did a soft return.

ALT-ENTER is not correct
try SHIFT-ENTER

ALT-Enter is correct, but you need to press-hold ALT first until it locked, before press enter.

So, it should be ATL_Lock-Enter.
