In the text messaging apps sometimes the other person in the convo is marked as Green or Yellow. What's the difference?

But I can text the same person and get a reply in yellow and then the next time be in green.

The colours must be dependent on who replies first or something in that means

Nope. Green means multiple messages have been grouped under one timestamp. Orange means it's a single message with a single timestamp.
