Hi is it possible to sideload any Linux distribution somehow? Maybe through those android installs?

If you can convert Linux into an android app, sure.

Bootloader is locked tighter than a Viagra spammer thread. Outlook not so good.

You won't be able to boot it as the operating system, but someone could build an emulator. Not an easy task but it's possible.

I know someone managed to put DOSBox out for PlayBook, but I haven't heard much about emulators on BB10.

I saw an app last night that runs Linux on android through virtual machine (its called Complete Linux Installer), and virtual machines kinda dont need bootloader implementation, but i missed that it needs rooted android device, so i guess its a no go on BB10 since we dont have root access

Yeah, there are plenty video game emulators for the PlayBook (and DOSBox) but that didn't seem to happen for BB10 (although I believe DOSBox is there, for whateve it's worth on a 4.2" screen.).

Most likely. Still.. If you ever get a copy of it, you can try updating your device to one of the many 10.2 leaks, installing the unlocked android runtime and sideloading the Complete Linux ported to BB10 (maybe using a debug token just to make sure). We never know right?

And on a side note... if you had mentioned that app on your OP, we would probably have had a completely different thread.

Heh it was kinda 3am when I started thread si I used general "sideload" expression. Anyway I am going try to side load the app to see what happens. What user level we have on bb10 anyway?

Sure. Now go and run Windows 98 and try to hit an icon. Go ahead and tell me resolution tops screen space then.

User. I doubt BlackBerry will ever let the runtime have root access (or let us get roo access there).

Just because i am curious: What exactly do you want "linux on your Z10" for?
I don't expect this to be a "look how good android is" thread, so the question is not meant sarcastically at all. I am wondering in which way this could be useful.

Is there some sort of terminal emulator available for BB10? If so you could pick up a super cheap Linux box like a $25 raspberry pi and remote into it from wherever you want. As a bonus, you could have pretty much unlimited storage and not worry about battery drain since it'll be remote.

BB10 won't be complete until you can run vi in a linux VM on it.

    Just to add

I am working on a semi-secret project I call MinOS. It's been very time consuming but essentially its an OS-in-an-app.

Dos Box + emulators for BB10 exist and work fine.

Linux as a boot mod, won't happen. But Linux in a bubble will.

Are you talking about something like BG Shell for BB10?

Not a shell communicating with the actual Z10 system, but one connected remotely to a cheap *nix box. Think putty.

Something like virtualbox or vmplayer that could run linux, BlackBerry os7 or android that would be the tops make os10 a piece of must-have geek kit.

Well I want to get maximum out of my product. For instance why would i need to carry laptop around on travels, when i can just plug Zxx to hdmi in room tv and use some mini BT mouse/keyboard for productive work in linux?
Does anyone remember Canonicals attempt of getting Ubuntu on android phones? They wanted to make dock which when you place phone on it, it automatically boots ubuntu completly compatible with android and even you could make calls. Ofc dock has to be connected to some tv/monitor.
So when posting this thread, i kinda knew answer on bootloader question, but i was interested if it can be loaded via some virtual machine, cause virtual machine is more less an app.
Next BB flagship will most likely have 3 or more gb ram and quad core processor so it will be more than enough for some kind of desktop experience. Z10 now is decent media device when hooked to a bigger screen and backed up with BT mouse, but it is non handy when you have huuuuuge search bar for instance.

Why not just run vi on the command line on qnx?

There's a full shell behind the bb10 goodness.

Put your device in dev mode and ssh away.

Kind of defeats the purpose of running Linux on the actual device. You'd still need a terminal to ssh in
