Was just reading up on the famous DHabkirk's BBM Channel when I saw this:
(rumor) 10.3.1 being released directly by BlackBerry!!!-img_20150119_164517.png

So basically, rumor has it that we won't have to wait for Carriers to release os updates anymore!

I've now seen a number of usually credible sources saying this, maybe BlackBerry has more influence with the carriers than we thought?

Could it be that BlackBerry wants to push them directly and basically told carriers "we need to be able to patch our OS much quicker and release directly to our customers due to our high-profile users needing the most up-to-date security on their mobile devices" or something?

Just throwing words out here hoping someone reads that and gets what I meant!

I don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon, but it'd make my year.

Huge step in the right direction, if true.

Dylan is a credible source, though.

If true, I think BlackBerry must believe its relationship with carriers is so bad right now, they don't care if they p$ss them off.

I can just imagine the onslaught of support calls to the carriers, on an OS they've never even seen! LOL

Which high profile users? I suspect the ones with that type of pull don't use consumer grade BBs anyway.

Don't forget that when you bypass the carrier approval procedure, you have to make sure your OS handle well their's network.
Every BB10 user that played with leaks and such noticed a drastic behaviour of the data network reception depending on the radio part of the OS.

Push direct is nice, but then please make sure you hard tested for all concerned networks (not a little pain), and prepare yourself for users support!

By the way, I wish they could direct sale too! ;p
But problem is the same, you must have the right shape for it (as Apple for exemple), and unfortunately we are far to that point (yet? )
For direct sale you need way more ressources...

But let's see if that just a rumor yet!

They might have gotten carriers to approve and had to wait for them and that is what the delay was for all we know. We will find out on the 27th though

Excellent move by BlackBerry for the benefit of customers. Carriers have been lousy. My span of 8 yrs, I never used official OS.

BlackBerry could release it globally if testing is done and approved by carriers, they could've asked to release it themselves and might have been the reason for the delay

Most probably they've been having carriers test the OS since last year and once all carriers are on board they'll release it globally, thus giving the impression of direct push (because everybody gets it at BlackBerry's GO!)

Could explain also the rapid development of the 3.1 branch also

Some points we were seeing multiple builds a day.

    Carrier a: everything's great
    carrier b: this doesn't work
BlackBerry : okay fixed here's a new os carrier a and b (a : no changes b: we updated this for your network support)

If they release to Verizon users they're going to get themselves in some hot water... Visual Voicemail hasn't worked on any 10.3.1 build, including 2072. There's a semi complicated fix for it that no everyday user is going to do.

Verizon customer service reps will quickly find out how many BB10 users they really have.

Granted I've never used Visual Voicemail despite being a Verizon customer for years, but if I'm not mistaken none of the 10.3.1 versions that have floated up have had Verizon specific radio stacks or overall build software. I would think that something like this would need actual files from the carrier to completely work.

Good to know, I've disabled automatic software updates on my Z10. 10.3.1.2072 still isn't good for STL100-1.

That is the real issue, if BlackBerry were to send updates out directly like Apple does.... they would also have to provide the additional tech support.

While it sound nice to push out global updates, BlackBerry is not in a position to take on the extra load of having to be the first line of support for all BlackBerry users.

But too be honest... with the whole move to enterprise, it might not matter. Send the updates to the BES Administrators, they test them and figure out the issues and work around, and then they push them out to users when THEY want to. But for BlackBerry's sake there shouldn't be any issues, or those BES Administrators might find a platform that is less work to deal with.

    Why?
For me 10.3.1.2072 runs fantastic, no problem, no glitch, wifi without disconnects, stable radio, long battery live, android apps run/install fast. Camera reacts better than 1154.
    For me the best release.

Did you do a restore or just a clean install? A number of people had issues doing restores with 2072... which would be the same for OTA upgrades... times several thousand users.
