phil, thats the same password they always used for demos and from more than one brand. It was pretty funny when it worked.

Most of the UK stores I visited have just got a plastic 'dummy' model on display and you have to ask a rep to fish a real one out of the store room if you want to play with it.

The iPhone and a few Galaxy phones all had working models out on the shop floor.

Trouble is, even if they put a real one on display, most of the public wouldn't be able to use it. I have seen countless PlayBook displays in shops where customers can't figure out to swipe the screen because it's counter-intuitive and there's no sticker on the PlayBook to tell you to swipe! And even if you do swipe them, I haven't seen a single one in stores that's actually been set up so you can play with it.

at risk of getting flamed/fanboyraped - the way Apple do it in their stores is perfect.

Firstly, you can pick the phones up and hold them in your hand (rather than the BB demo units which are stuck in a metal vice type thing, the iDevices are held by a thin metal wire.. I assume some get stolen and they just write it off as a loss?).

Secondly, they are fully open to play with, including sending stuff! I think what they do is let you think you've sent it, but you really haven't. Then at the end of the day everything automatically resets.

this is sort of attention to detail Jobs was famed for.

re: the O2 rep pushing an S3 rather than the Z10, I wonder if this is related to the sales commission he receives? is it different RIM vs Samsung? I know this is what killed Nokia in the sales league.

I was in the Westfield Stratford mall earlier (US readers - the 2nd biggest mall in the UK) in an O2 shop and there was a Samsung rep (complete with Samsung suitcase!?) taking photos of the Z10 stand. Clearly they are a little worried :-)

Apple display models let you do absolutely anything you want including changing the wallpaper or loading up porn.

As soon as the phone goes into 'sleep mode' (ie the screen switches off) it all reverts to how it was before and clears the cookies so you don't stay logged in to any accounts.

    BlackBerry take note.
