Does anyone know how to detect what is causing the indicator next to the battery (top left)

It's an app/apps using your location. Even the OS uses your location, it was part of the setup process. It's hard to say which is using it directly with that in mind but you can go to Settings, Security and Privacy, Application Permissions and in the drop down, choose 'Location'. It will then show you a list of apps that use your location info and in some case you can adjust the permissions for it to not to.
