I don't normally use Accuweather because it I don't find it useful, but it is installed. I have looked for this behavior on my home network and have not yet found it. Maybe I haven't been watching long enough, or maybe the BlackBerry version is too old to have this capability built in. Will monitor for the day and let you know if I find anything.

Might be good thing...well selling your data not really I could honestly care less about that nonsense. I usually have my diagnostic data enabled and stuff like that, can sometimes workout for you. For awhile was the only way I could get onto google plus. Through the link in there app. Also helped my maps work and its nice to leave on with clock and calendar

Things like these can happen when using proprietary software, use open-source alternatives when possible and there will be far less surprises like these.

And Stallman will be proud of you.

"Reveal Mobile helps advertising agencies, brands, media companies and mobile app publishers generate more revenue via highly accurate location data. Reveal’s location-based audience databases, derived from GPS, Bluetooth beacons and WiFi, create accurate and valuable segments that dramatically enhance advertising performance. Processing over 20 million beacon events per day, Reveal Mobile owns the world’s largest source of 1st-party beacon location data. Customers include AccuWeather,"

    "Data Monetization
    Description:
Reveal Mobile generates the highest revenue per user for your data, with or without advertising, and with or without an SDK.

As the battle to turn mobile attention into mobile revenue heats up, app publishers continue to seek new revenue streams. Reveal Mobile’s technology enables your company to turn your app’s location data into revenue, with or without advertising.

We’ve built relationships with dozens of premium mobile data partners. They view us as a trusted filter for high quality 1st party location data, and pay premium rates for access to this data. By leveraging BLE beacon signals along with GPS and wifi, we create the most precise location data available today, and therefore the most revenue for your location data."

Both quotes taken from Reveal Mobile's company listing on proximity.directory (whatever that's worth, however I assume it's been populated by the company).

What's not clear from those passages is whether AccuWeather are using Reveal Mobile's data for better location positioning for a more accurate service or whether they are uploading data to make money, that still may depend on how Reveal Mobile handle the data sent to them.

It's possible AccuWeather are using Reveal Mobile for targeted ads, it may only be seen in the ad supported versions. However that still doesn't answer the question of what does Reveal Mobile do with the data.

I'm confused. The default BB10 weather app -- that appears to use AccuWeather -- is now sending our location data to advertisers or whomever?

So you know that the article is about an iOS application, and that I have looked for the behavior described from the BlackBerry application and not found it. So, no it does not appear that the preinstalled AccuWeather application is sending location data to anyone other that AccuWeather when you allow it in the application permissions.

I believe the preinstalled weather app is not from accuweather, it is from blackberry, using the accuweather api and data. The accuweather app is another one (http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/20143).

The app works perfectly fine with location services turned off so ensure its disabled if your worried (or use a different provider to trust).

That's not the problem! The problem is that it was bypassing location by getting the location of the WiFi!

That's a small jump away from what was being discussed when I commented, I was referring to the BlackBerry 10 app. AccuWeather stated they were not making use of WiFi based geolocation. As far as I know the reasons for using Reveal Mobile are still sketchy, their claim that they didn't know the full behaviour of the Reveal Mobile SDK despite making use of it strikes of naivety and incompetence.
