I was wondering what the consensus is regarding switching devices...

I expect to be getting my new Passport early this week and want to know what would be a better way to transfer everything over from my Z10 - Link or the Device Switch app?

I have used Link in the past but was wondering about the app since I never heard of it before a few days ago.

    Thanks for your opinions!

you need to use device switch inside link. you won't be able to restore a backup from your Z10 unless the OSes are exactly alike.

I do link. Tried the app once, didn't seem to be for BB10 to BB10 so I just went back to link (didn't try to hard to figure out if I was doing something worng)

I'm not concerned about restoring a backup - I was asking about transferring date from my existing device to a new one.

I used Link recently when switching from an old and tired Z10 to a brand new Z10. Flawless!

I just use the device switched to go from a Z10 to a Leap. Also worked very well.

All my important things are either connected to the cloud or saved on the SD card, so if I want to switch devices I move the SD over, wipe the old device and setup the new device as usual.

For things like SMS messages, there are SMS backup apps in BlackBerry World.

For the record, I used Link and didn't get some of my contacts or any of my Notes. Also, none of my calendar entries were copied.

There was no rhyme or reason as to which contacts got transferred and which did not. Link continues to disappoint.

Just finished the transfer with the Device Switch app. It worked like a champ!

After this experience I don't think I'd even bother with Link again to switch devices.

    Thanks again to all.

Question, did your BlackBerry Id and bbm Id get transferred as well ? I am about to get a used passport and so I wonder if device switch app will replace the old owner's bb id with my bb id...?

More important is to make sure the previous owner turns over anti-theft before he turns the device over. If that is done replacing the BBID is easy. If not it may be difficult or impossible.

Mine was new. I didn't transfer my BBID I just entered it when prompted after powering the phone on for the first time.

I can confirm that if you DO NOT turn OFF BlackBerry Protect, you will not be able to switch devices. The backup of the old device will work fine but about 5 seconds into the transfer to the new device, you will get a "Restore Cancelled" error that will not work no matter how many times you click "Retry".

Bottom Line: I would turn off BlackBerry Protect on both devices until you complete the "Switch Device".
