Looks like they are now backtracking and saying 70,000 apps will be available.

RIM: We're Counting Down The Days Until BlackBerry 10

I think they mean 70,000 have already been built...I mean it is Still December. January is another month, the cut off date is January 21st. When "have already been built" means in Present tense. If it said, "There were 70,000 apps that were built specifically for BlackBerry 10" than that would be past tense, and would make room for "Were...Okay, so obviously they have built more now."

Their goal is 100,000. More apps are being made because more developers are getting a look at BlackBerry Jam from all over the world.

70,000 apps built specifically for BlackBerry 10 so far, if I'm not mistaken there are 30,000 portable apps for PlayBook as well?
Also- did you read the whole thing?
BlackBerry App World storefront, which currently hosts around 140,000 apps. There are 70,000 apps that have been built specifically for BlackBerry 10.

Isn't RIM looking for over 100,000 apps at launch...the largest collection of apps of any mobile OS?

70,000 apps. How many of them will be part of the app graveyard? iOS and Android have a massive app graveyard with apps which have never been downloaded once. Blackberry World could have 20 apps for BB10 at launch as long as they are the necessary ones.

Yes, RIM is looking for 100,000 app's at launch. All Vivek said was that their were 70,000 app's currently available for BlackBerry 10.

Yes, this is true, however, we know that RIM isn't looking for quantity, they want quality.
The certification process will help with this.

No matter how you want to read or spin the numbers there is no doubt that RIM will be in a much better position at launch than i think most anyone expected. They are truely trying their hardest to reach every dev out there and make them atleast aware of BB10 development.

Exactly, dev's now know that RIM is committed. Once developers see how many app's there are on BlackBerry 10 launch. They may also want to develop.

Even 70000 apps will be huge. It wont mean a lot of the top apps aren't part of the catalog, but 70k is still a great feat. I hope they're not padding out the numbers with things like ebooks and weblinks though.

I don't expect the hype to stop here, RIM is hosting even more port-a-thon's which I'm expecting 10,000+ app/games to result from these.

70,000 is a ton for a new platform not even on the market yet, and those are apps "specifically designed for BB10". Playbook apps are not designed for BB10, but will work on BB10, so that will be more. Are they including Android ported apps in that number? If not then that could be more. Anyway the big apps is what people will truly care about and use. I'd love to see the average number of apps actually used on the other platforms compared to the number available.

I'm expecting Android app's submitted for BlackBerry 10 (and maybe PlayBook, however, submitted with both BB10 and PlayBook support). RIM has confirmed multiple big app's and they hopefully have left the others as a surprise.

they might be included, they are in the 140K number but that is just how it is.

    70,000 really isn't bad for a launch.

The key thing is that there are a good amount of quality and high-demand apps.

while true its a completely different world today than 4-5 years ago. I would compare to how many windows phone 8 launched with to get a little better comparison. They launched with between 100-120K apps i think. They also run windows phone 7 apps so that helps with its numbers. Both bb10 and WP8 will probably have about the same number at each respective launch.

Yeah, it is important for them to only have totally valid apps and there is no padding at all in the 700k on ios or android stores either.

I didn't think wp7 apps were automatically compatible with wp8?

In any case I don't honestly care whether or not bb10 launches with 10k, 100k or a million apps, all that really matters to me is whether or not those vital apps are there and I hope that previously mentioned focus on getting the top 100 apps or whatever it was on there in time for launch still happens so that whether its kindle, netflix, instagram or whatever those ones you need are there.

10k-100k is a good start imo and I'm glad to hear they won't stop reaching out to devs after launch (didn't think so but nice to hear). There are apps that I want but the developer has put too much work already in with little payout. Often it sounds like devs will make tons of cash on IOS/Android but that isn't the case for even the small dev who might make a great app but the demand is low. We need those guys too but how to convince them at this point?

I take something different from this quote.

"There are 70,000 apps that have been built specifically for BlackBerry 10"

The part that catches me is built specifically for BB10. I am thinking this does not include those that are ported from the PlayBook. That would be another 10-30k they are working on converting. Their goal I believe was around 150k apps, so they could have a good amount more than WP8.

As Matt stated earlier, they DO include ebooks in the App World numbers currently. I don't have exact numbers, but a quick search reveals thousands of ebooks. If this ratio stays the same, that's a considerable amount of padding that isn't present in other app stores. That being said, I am hopeful since they state that the apps are made specifically for BB10, that they aren't including ebooks in that total. Although even that statement could be purposefully misleading.
