Odd battery percent shutdown and battery life observations
OK, we all saw people moaning about battery life and the phone shutting down at odd battery levels. I think I have an idea why it is happening but unfortunately no idea how to resolve it.
So with the newest 10.2 leak I used a fair bit of my battery charge and thought I could drain it fully to give it a ful recharge cycle - what you do to recalibrate the control circuit in a laptop if your battery estimations are significantly off.
As a battery drainer I used stereo tube from app world, battery guru does the monitoring.
So what happened? My phone just shut down at 18%...
I rebooted the phone and it had a happy 20% left and ran some more until it sit down at 6% - after which I rebooted it and found I have 18% instead... ok...
Let the phone run some more and it ran...
...and hit 0%... and ran. It then shut down again and refused to boot up again.
So that sounds like a dead battery except that it isn't...
I then swapped out the battery for the one I had in the charger bundle and checked it's state - the bundle reported orange - i.e. somewhere between 25 and 75% charge, not solid red or blinking red as one would expect for an empty battery.
During my drain test I further noticed that the battery voltage was somewhat erratic - it dropped to 3.51 Volts, went up to 3.58 down, up down..
I think it shut down at 3.41V.
Now Lithium Ion batteries are never fully empty when they report empty, however they tend to be close to 3V when empty.
So what does this tell us:
The battery life estimation in the phone based on the charge reading has an issue. This is the same issue that will cause the sudden jump in battery charge of you reboot your phone.
As to what can be done to resolve this. I don't know...
I am not sure the standard laptop technique will work.
