What is the rational behind BB moving up in digits? So why was it 10.1 then 10.2 the 10.2.1 then 10.3? Why not stick to 10.2 series? does it just mean a bigger leap? I didn't see much of a leap from 10.1 to 10.2...
I understand microsoft just skipped 9 all together.

Must be the differences are significant enough for the development team to jump a whole number.

The question you should be asking why is it BlackBerry10 and why not BlackBerry8? If you didn't understand the leap, this should have been the question. No?

Every time they change the os from 10.1, 10.2, 10.2.1, 10.3, 10.3.1 and etc there are major changes to the os. 10.2 saw the addition of many important features missing from 10.1 and was released alongside new devices. 10.2.1 saw new features added and some changed slightly, 10.2.2 was done as a continuation of 10.2.1 but with focus on secure communications for Germany. 10.3 brings flat design, lots of changes to the ui and some more new features. Was designed to release with new phones. 10.3.1 adds even more features including those needed for the Classic.

BlackBerry went from 7.1 straight to 10 with PlayBook os 1thru 2.1 in between...

Well, as long as BlackBerry users use it and satisfied why cares? Let's say someone gives you a new and latest BB10 phone while you were expecting a Bold 9900 or Torch 9810 running OS7, won't you jump for joy instead of asking 'Why'? They're just numbers as long as there's something new to play and explore, it's not an issue anymore. We love new OS (even those still being cook), don't we?

The answer to this is simple. BlackBerry OS 7 was the last legacy OS. Then we had PlayBook OS 1 and PlayBook OS 2. This leads us to the 10th iteration of the OS which is BlackBerry OS 10.

Nice retrospective reasoning but BB10 was originally called BBX and was well in development before PlayBook OS 2 was released.

BlackBerry couldn't continue to call it BBX as that is a registered trademark of another company who went to court to protect it. So BlackBerry decided to interpret the X as the Roman numeral for 10 and thus BlackBerry 10 came in to being.
