Probably not. Verizon phones are CDMA, so removing the SIM, should not affect how it is seen. It will still be seen as a Verizon specific phone.

Edit: Putting in a SIM, from a carrier who has already released it "might" work. With the emphasis on might.

The Verizon Classic had bugs out of the box. The one that bugged me the most is that Remember reminders did not show up in the Calendar.

I'm not sure if the bug was in the Calendar or in Remember, but after buying two Classics at a VZN store and returning them, I decided to email Michael Clewley (?).

I got an immediate response that it was a known issue and it was fixed. He said the update would be pushed late April-ish.

Don't know if that means for all devices, but that's what he said about the Classic.

I wonder what obligation Verizon or any carrier has to update the software in light of the known Freak vulnerabilities.

It seems to me that if the phone maker has addressed the issue but the carrier doesn't push minimally the fix to its users, and there is a breech as a result, the carrier would be at fault. I don't know any company that would want to risk being responsible for that; not even the phone maker.

Nobody is at fault as no party guarantees the absence of any security risk or vulnerability.

Verizon is under no obligation to EVER release a software update for your BlackBerry. BlackBerry is also under no obligation to make a software update available for you, ever.
