I find that the native BlackBerry 10 browser doesn't load the mobile sites version of a website.

It's been like this since 10.0 days on this and a few other sites I feaquently visit.

    Using firefox android app:

    Native browser:

    Here test it yourself:

I am not on desktop mode, so my question is, what's wrong with the native BlackBerry browser that it doesn't load certain mobile sites?

    I'm using a passport on 10.3.2.xxx

There's nothing wrong with the browser, the website is just reading the useragent and giving it the desktop site.

I believe the website developer for the site you're visiting has to update their codes for the mobile site to recognize the BlackBerry browser and redirect to the mobile one

Try Browsie Browser, it's capable of changing the useragent to android, iPhone etc (even custom one) and has a native browser feeling.

I got the mobile site as well on a Z10. Maybe the website thinks a passport screen is large enough for desktop use.

Interesting. If I click the link in the CB app, the site opens in desktop mode. If I select "Open in external browser," it opens the mobile site.

I don't have the option of viewing the website from the CB app. It automatically opens the browser.

CB: Settings, General. There you can set how links are opened.

In your browser check Settings, Developer Tools to see if you have it in desktop mode.

OK, I verified that inside the CB app it does open in desktop mode. This could be a bug in the CB app. That is, it is not sending the right user agent.

    http://whatsmyuseragent.com/

I just embedded a user agent display. Obviously I have to save this post and then load it.

OK. This is what I see when using the browser.
    -------
    Mozilla/5.0 (BB10; Touch) AppleWebKit/537.35+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/10.3.1.1016 Mobile Safari/537.35+
    ---------

From the CB app, it just sees this:
    MNAPP(CB10) 1.0 BB10 Mobile
    -------

    Bug?

    Short answer is no.

The long answer could be a long discussion but comes down to what is the User Agent string supposed to be used for, and what decides if a browser should get the mobile site.

Is it based on screen resolution? Already mentioned above many mobile devices have higher resolution than desktop systems still in use. Speed, cost or reliability of a mobile data connection? Should a tablet get the desktop site because it has the screen to carry it off, the mobile site because the embedded auto play videos in the desktop site could use up a whole month of data in one load?

Once you've decided, as a website designer, what you want your site to do, how do you correctly determine what client you are dealing with? Most sites use tools that do a pretty good job, but none of them are perfect because some clients tell the truth, like CB10, and others lie.

The whole thing is a mess and surprising that it even works at all.

Just make sure your Desktop mode is not enabled.
Browser > Settings > Developer Tools > Desktop Mode

    Native browser and mobile sites-img_20150515_231740.png

Once you've verified that then browse to http://m.nikonrumors.com/ and it should open the site as you wanted.

I actually like the desktop sites but usually adding "m" for mobile does the trick.

Eh, I think your best bet is simply to use the browser since it delivers more data in the user agent to the website than rendering the website inside CB.
