In OS7 the name of the wireless network was always shown on the top of the (home) screen. But this doesn't seem to be the case with my Q10. (Must one select "Network Connections" under "System Settings"?)

Yes that's it. The network doesn't show on the home screen anymore.

From home screen, swipe down from the top and you can see the Wireless SSID

If you pull down from the top on your home screen, the first line shows date and network.
