I wish everyone would stop telling the OP that they were doing something wrong. The quality of photos at concerts has been my #1 gripe with the BlackBerry 10 camera experience since they screwed it up somewhere between 10.1 and 10.2. It USED to work just fine on my Z10 many many OS versions ago but the 'upgrades' ruined it. This is most definitely a software issue that can be and NEEDS to be addressed. Before anyone jumps on the 'this is a business phone' bandwagon, remember that business people entertain clients at concerts, the theater, sporting events, etc and you don't wanna be the guy that has a phone that can't take a picture at the event. 10.3.0 made a huge difference on my Z30 where you can tap on the screen to pick a focus point because it also changes the center point of the metering information. However, it takes WAY TOO LONG to actually come into focus, so taking a picture of anything dynamic is an exercise in futility. I've bumped up to 10.3.1 but I haven't been to a concert yet to see if the new version is any faster at achieving focus lock. This is an area that BlackBerry really does need to address. They know it too because they're hiring for a camera team (see Bla1ze's tweet)

Do u mean class wise if so class 10. 30 MB/s
I meant maker, class and speed. Depending on the maker of the micro-SD, the problem may actually be with the micro-SD card. On my Q10 I used to have a problem with recording videos (didn't focus too well, freeze while recording, shuts down in the middle of video recordings), and I thought it was my phone, but someone told me it may be a problem with my micro-SD (I have a PNY class 10. 20/30 MB/s in it then). I switched to a Sandisk Ultra (or Extreme, whichever one is the mid-range level) and I never had the problem again. I have been to lots of concerts and taken videos with my Q10 and never a lag or freeze or out of focus anymore. You may want to try that...,

I find that very hard to believe. So far this has been one of the best cameras on a phone lately. Check out these unedited I photos I took lastnight and five mins ago.

BBRY is not known for good camera.
The Passport camera takes too long to focus and not quite good in low light condition. If there are moving objects, the camera may take forever to focus. In such case, try to focus on a fix objects.

The issue is NOT hardware as far as I can tell. BlackBerry uses as good, if not better, hardware than apple or samsung.

The clear delta is the software. BlackBerry has never had a camera software design group. It was using its existing resources, quality people but not experts in this type of software.

They have acknowledged the lack of specific talent within their organization and put advertisement out to hire.

So until this is in place, new people come in, trained up to work on qnx and the tools we are going to see these type of issues.

Quality will be reasonable or good enough for most scenarios.

    My 2c.

Did you choose high quality video recording ? It might be set to 720p, and you also might want to remove "continually focus during recording "

The z30 with a much worse camera can do much better than that. Granted it was arcade fire when I tried so that might have helped !

If it was a guns n roses concert, it would have worked fine
Agreed. I'm currently just assuming that the Passport doesn't like Usher. I bet it'd focus perfectly on Geddy Lee.

I think you either had continuous video focus turned off (you have to manually tap to refocus but can't lock the exposure)

I with continuous video focus on, you can lock the focus/exposure by tapping and holding on the square.

Night mode makes the camera slower.. I recommend using the continuous auto video focus lock in automode, which imo does a better job of changing the lighting settings without slowing down the camera.

Try this: go into a dark room with a TV / computer.
Use settings: flash off & auto scene

Step back about 4 feet and take a picture of the screen.
Now lock the focus on the screen and take another pic.

All cameras on BBRYs are only average. It makes me wonder if they need to bring in a A/V specialist to optimize them on the software side to make them perform better. It can't be that BBRY camera hardware is always crap, maybe they just need a camera expert to come in an do an overhaul on settings and automatic behavior.

They just hired a new cam dev

And I disagree, the cam on my 9810 was amazing. I think my 9700 and 9800 were good too, can't remember though.

OP maybe, just maybe, you were too excited to show off your Passport that you forgot how to properly operate the camera/video. Your forgot that your Passport is a business tool not an entertainment toy. OK don't get worked up cause I'm just kidding. Cheers.

I'm not sure a lot of these were intended to say "you're doing it wrong" as much as "here are tips for getting what you want". No doubt BlackBerry could make the software work better, or camera work better but there were some good tips in the thread to fix the result.

Quit frankly, the camera could use a lot of work, but a lot of you make it sound like the OP is doing something wrong rather then admitting the camera could be better. Sure, it does take good photos but it does have problems with focusing and thus it can take along time to actually take a picture. Combined with poor low light performance and, yeah, you have a pretty poor camera to take to a concert. I'm fairly certain the last time I went to a concert taking pictures and recording it with your phone seemed like a pretty typical thing to do.

For me the focusing issue makes the camera almost unbearable to use. It's a freakin phone camera, if I wanted to be messing around waiting for it to focus or trying to focus it myself, or messing around with settings (as some of you suggest), I'd be caring around a SLR. I don't expect it to take amazing pictures that contend with my point and shoot or a SLR camera, but I do expect it to take a semi decent picture when I point it at something and hit the shutter button. Not a blurry picture of the floor seconds later.

I agree that most people today expect really good pictures from their mobile devices.... Apple, Samsung, LG, Nokia have all concentrated on providing that ability - larger chips, real lenses, optical stabilization, specialized software, laser auto focus, crazy MP numbers..... For BlackBerry the camera is an afterthought.

I have to say that the iPhone 6 can take really nice pictures without bracing it against something, without fiddling with settings, and without the sun to your back. The biggest operator error the OP made was in not knowing his device and it's limitations or the requirements to get a decent image. But then the Passport isn't a consumer device is it.
