My passport was running low on storage so I purchased a memory card, copied my music from my PC to the memory card and deleted the music from the phone.

I put the memory card into the phone but I am having problems in that the music application still believes I have music on my phone but as the files don't exist, it can't play it.

If I remove my memory card it comes up with lots of music but I can't delete it as it isn't there!

Can I force a rescan of the device memory?

So you have successfully copied all your music to a card? excellent. Now open the music app and that should force the phone to scan the card for music. I have a 128GB card and it takes a while for it to scan again after reboots.

Then, once the music shows up on your card, check the music app again and see if anything has populated the recently added spot.

It scans the media card, that bit is ok but it still thinks there is music on the device memory which has been deleted.

Have you tried taking out the memory card and rebooting the device?

Tried that. No memory card, no music files, reboot. Open music and it list 100s of songs. Can't delete them or play them as it comes up with unknown error 10 as the files don't exist. There must be an index somewhere which hasn't updated.

This further validates my suspicions that the indexing system is responsible for the random SD Card corruption issues some people (myself included) have experienced.

Try copying just one music file into the internal music folder and reboot (without SD card). Hopefully, the music player will rescan. You can also go into file manager and take a look inside the music folder just to try and trigger some scanning. If this works, reboot and give the phone a few minutes to index and hope it works.

Just had the same issue and the solution worked for me as well.
    Thanks!
