You're talking about a manual encryption tool...... That's completely different from an encrypted file system, and obviously that works very differently.
Yes indeed. I had a question about how it worked and if the BB10 encryption could only work for "full file system encryption" or if it could also work for "individual/portable file" encryption.

BB must be doing this with block level encryption. That's how most "full disk encryption" is implemented, including on iPhones. It's efficient in terms of power. Also remember that the flash on phones is very slow, so you need to be able to read and decrypt individual blocks on the fly without having to decrypt an entire file at a time.

Also, supporting the portability of encrypted files doesn't make so much sense in this context, since the key is in the actual hardware in the phone. The whole point is that the FS can be read only by that one particular device. Manipulating the FS by copying an entire file and then copying it back manually would surely break the file and make it unreadable.

Here is a decent high level overview of the tradeoffs of applying encryption at different levels of the stack:

BTW, one can certainly argue that file-level crypto is stronger, but I think that would be impractical on a phone.

After reenabling smb1 Passport mounted the drives. The pictures are still corrupted (as expected from the previous discussion).
Does anybody think that they could be “rediscovered” by using a program like recuva or something similar?

No. That's for recovering deleted files or when the FAT has been corrupted. Your pictures were ENCRYPTED, and there is no longer any way to decrypt them. That possibility went away when they were deleted off of the phone externally (as part of the Move command).

Or a physically damaged drive (in some cases), but in the OP's case, nope.
