    Hi,

I am about to get mobile data 'pay by use' for the whole summer and I only had mobile data experience in the past when I had an Android device almost a year ago.

It will be my first experience using mobile data on BlackBerry 10 (Passport here 10.3.2).

Are there any tips to spare mobile data? Any compression features or apps like Opera Max? I am mostly going to use it for mails/bbm/web browser. Could be a bit of Facebook too. Currently have Browsie Browser too, can't tell if it has such feature.

    Thanks !

    Thanks

In today's day and age, having less than a 3gb data plan is a sad state of affairs. You should try to get a proper contract instead of the pay as you go.

I'm not aware of any compression possible with BlackBerry 10 browser, but you can disable automatic loading of images in emails. That's about it
Also, 10.3 introduced automatic data monitoring

Use the device monitor's built in data usage controls:

You might be able to learn what uses more or less data, and decide accordingly.

Edit: open the page in the browser if the images don't show up in the CB10 app.

Compression won't help very much unless all you are viewing is text. Multimedia is usually already in a compressed form.

Having said that if you are even moderatly careful of what you do on line and how you set up your accounts you don't have to use a lot of mobile data.

I get by happily on less than 300 MB per month. I do that by setting my email accounts to not download images or attachments and judge by the subject and sender if I need to read it right away or if it can wait till Wi-Fi is available.

I don't avoid browsing, Facebook, Twitter, etc when I'm on mobile data, but I also don't follow every link, watch every video or listen to every song posted to my timelines, and certainly not when on mobile data. As others have said, you can certainly consume almost as much bands as you want. But that is a personal choice. If it is more important for you to get by on a small plan you can do it. It is a bit like being on a diet.

I've attached what is a pretty typical month for me.

It all depends on how you setup your device and how much you want to use it. At times I burn up that much of data in a single day.

Also be sure to use this, set it about halfway or three quarters of the way. It'll warn you that you're about to reach your data limit, letting you know to cut back on streaming or downloading lengthy files etc.

Also set BlackBerry World to this:

Thanks you for all those replies ! I ended up dropping Virgin Mobile and went straight to Telus. 4 GB of data for 60$/month. Was the cheapest I could find. Virgin Mobile would have been 73$/month for 3GB of Data.

Is there any way to prevent specific apps from using mobile data? Like Talk2Watch, I'm scared it eats a lot of data. For now I just close it but some apps work headless.

    Thanks

No, Ontario is worse. The plans are close to 70 for 500mb.

You can easily try to get a plan from saskatchewan or something though. That's the only way to go.

The guy above you just said he had 5GB for 48$/month in Ontario. Plus Wind Mobile seems to have very cheap price.

Wind is special. I am with Wind. I have unlimited for 40 dollars. But they don't count.

Their network is very small, and their towers are very congested, so the data is very slow, and the frequency used has very poor building penetration.

So no, Wind doesn't count. You guys are doing better there.

I would rater have like 200 KB/s of speed than paying an extra 30$ for less capacity

See, the problem isn't that it's 200kb/s of speed. It's that it's no speed. No data connection at all, it just drops.

And inside buildings, and in weird places. You just lose your signal.

It's too bad, I love them. And I'll be stuck with them for a while longer.

    Else: 1.5mb

The above settings might help to consume less data

Sideload Opera Mini, then turn off image loading. If you'd rather still have image, set the quality to low.

Opera Mini doesn't support GIF and video unlike Opera Max (CMIIW) but still better than nothing.

Bonus points in that Opera Mini technically acts as a VPN, it routes your data from the source to their servers to compress before sending it to you, it allows me to bypass the stupid Indonesian DNS level censorship.

Doesn't this essentially make it a man in the middle? I'd be wary of browsing any secure sites with this browser.

Yes, and it's the same for every VPN and even your ISP is the man in the middle. Opera is a company with good reputation, so there's not much to worry.

Use device monitor to keep track of your data and how you are spending it. You should disable location and use Wi-Fi whenever available. I would disable push notifications for emails, disable push notifications for social networking accounts, and really anything you don't desperately need. Disable emails from automatically downloading content. You can even set a limit for how much data you can use to get a warning. You can also mess with the settings in the BlackBerry browser and cut a lot of content.

Spend 99 cents and get a browser that lets you block images and ads. Those two things alone will eat more of your mobile data than pretty much anything else you do with your browser.
