I have been running on a 1gb data plan for over a year now with no problems at all, never go over my allowance.

If my carrier forces the new update to my Z30 when I'm out of wifi range it's going to take me over my monthly allowance.

Am I within my rights to ask for credit if this occurs?

    I'm with Vodafone UK.

This is based on what I have read about Verizon.

If I'm not mistaken, even if it's a mandatory update, it'll only do so once connected to wi-fi. I may be wrong though.

Not entirely sure about that... I wasn't keeping close tabs on my data use this morning but between when I checked MyVerizon last night and when I checked shortly after my phone rebooted following the mandatory update today, there is about a 1 GB (and some change) difference in my data use. I was home earlier on my home WiFi but got the notification to update while walking out of my apartment to drive to work. And I haven't been connected to WiFi network at work all day either. So I can't say for certain either way.

Sorry for bad news but my Z30 on VZW updated over cellular service (no WiFi) .

I would think you could easily fight the data usage if provider tries to charge you for any overage.

Do the update while roaming overseas.

FWIW, the mandatory updating has happened on only two carriers, both American. That's 50% even for American BB10 carriers, who are mandated by state laws to push a "kill switch" update.

But OP, you should clarify this point about data consumption with your carrier. Even better if you do it before an update is made available. If they force this update on you off-WiFi, they shouldn't count it against your data. At the very least, it's a slippery slope.

I don't think OS updates count towards data usage. When my Moto X updated a 1 Gb file for the OS it didn't show on my bill or in my usage. This was from Verizon, not sure if other carriers are the same.

It happened to a guy on AT&T. He says they were going to refund him for extra data he ended up having to buy, but last I heard his data counter hadn't been reset.

A nice and juicy FCC complaint works miracles in such cases.
