Those who keep crying about Flash being ditched should be a bit leary of Flash all together. There's other reasons why BlackBerry dropped Flash support other than licensing. It's called security.

They didn't drop support for Flash - They just made it default to HTML5 if available instead of always using Flash.

Exactly. In Chrome, Youtube defaults to HTML5; in another browser like Opera, Flash.

You know BlackBerry had full source of flash and they have been patching flaws themselves. It's not like they were using several years old flash binaries...

True but Blackberry was supporting mobile flash on their own and were developing and patching it for bb10 devices. Thats why BB10 has had flash support up until now.
Adobe Flash is a proprietary product. BlackBerry never had any development nor support on Flash. The version that was included in BB10 Browser was actually last available from Adobe.

Call me mean, but not our concern. Try searching for a flash capable browser, either in bbaw or an android browser. You might get lucky

Write them and tell them to get with the times and embrace HTML5 video. Start a twitter/facebook campaign towards slow dinosaur websites like this and get millions of followers to bring about change...get on that eh? Thanks!

I'm pretty sure BB was licensing access to the source code, which allowed them to not only include Flash but to make updates and such. I'm sure the cost of licensing and supporting flash through development means was decided to not be forth it, especially when BB is trying to cut costs. Being the only platform left with Flash did not translate to more sales, and apps using AIR didn't perform very well anyway (which I think was part of the licensing deal).

How often was the browser actually updated tho. Seems like a week doesn't go by that you get a desktop notification that Flash needed to be updated because of a security hole.

Evidence or not, BlackBerry has already stated that they are going to and have already removed Flash support. If you need Flash support, you will be required to find a third party browser that supports it.

Which is perfectly fine. You can still use Flash if you want to, and it leaves the security risk out of BlackBerry's hands.

This is what I believe happened. Considering that content providers generally don't use Flash, I'm sure BlackBerry is also confident that losing Flash is not a huge problem.

Adobe had decided to no longer develop Flash on mobile, any security problems will be on BlackBerry's lap to fix, I'm sure they don't want to bother with that

It was announced at Dev World in San Francisco when they announced BlackBerry OS 10 as BBX that they had been submitting fixes back to Adobe for Air and Flash. As an attendee I left there with a PlayBook and a licence for Adobe's Air development licence. At the time Air was going to be of of the main development options for Tablet OS and BlackBerry 10.

Anyway, like a lot of things that have to do with BlackBerry, then as now, you have to pay attention to what little official information is released, not the speculation.

As to why they dropped Adobe support. I speculate that is was financial constraints. License fees are part of that. But it also has to have been a drag on their development teams trying to keep BlackBerry secure and support Adobe code. But as I already said, don't pay attention to speculation, it is too often wrong.

Make sure the user agent is browser settings is set to BlackBerry. It works on flash games as well. It should have came with that set as the default.

Just wondering why BlackBerry isn't supporting Flash in the browser anymore. If a flash browser of minimal size can be installed and work on a BlackBerry, why can't it be native?

Would supporting flash negate what BlackBerry is currently supporting?

I know flash is on the way out, but why not support it until it's completely dead. Don't know much about compatibility so just interested for the reasoning.

    Thanks!

    Posted via CB10
It's not about the simplicity of it.

BlackBerry has to pay Adobe millions of dollars in licensing fees to be legally allowed to include flash in their devices.
