Nope, not unless you have the CDMA variant. CDMA doesn't work with a GSM enabled handset.

If the radio frequency is the same, then insert the sim from the carrier you choose. Or at least that is how I assume it works now that vzw uses Sims on 4g devices

The SIM card has nothing to do with a CDMA phone. The SIM is for roaming only. What OP wants to know, and correct me if I am wrong, is how to use his phone on another CDMA operator.

It's basically impossible unless that other operator allows you phone to be on their network. To do so, they need to add you to their network.

That was the case with 3g phones. With 4g phones it is different

My VZW Z10 will not work in any capacity (as far as making calls) without the sim installed

That's interesting. Is it one SIM card for Verizon and another SIM for global GSM roaming?

Or is it just one SIM card for both?

Can you unlock the Verizon part and pop in a SIM card of another CDMA provider or do you still need to register your phone with the carrier?

You cannot use a Verizon phone w/another CDMA provider.

It is only one SIM card used for the Verizon phones. The SIM card is mostly for the overseas GSM networks as well as some phone identification.

As a person that owned the Samsung IP-830 (2006-2009), the Blackberry Tour 9630 (2009), the Bold 9650 (2010), the Bold 9930 (2011- June 2013). The Q10 (June 2013-Dec 2013), and now the Z30, which were all CDMA/GSM phones. I can tell you that, whether 3G or 4G, if you take out the SIM card on such phones, the phone will not work.

My bold 9650 worked fine with no sim installed. The only time a sim was in it was when I traveled overseas. However the Z10 will not.
Out of curiosity, what countries use the same cdma frequency as vzw? 850/900

Bell Canada uses 850 for CDMA and GSM (the rumour is that they are actually planning to drop CDMA in 2015).

I think that Sprint still roams on Bell's CDMA network
