Are emoji's the same "smiley faces" we have in BBM?

Well not exactly sure. All I see are question marks in parallelogram.

I don't know then. All I can say is that when I send a smiley from my Q10 to an iPhone, they only see symbols. When an iPhone sends me a smiley, I see the smiley. By the way, this is all in SMS.

I've read a few posts about using Snap to download some Android apps,
Apex Launcher, A.I. Type Keyboard, A.I. Type Emoji Type Keyboard Plugin.
I couldn't get any to work. Still researching.

This option only work for social media apps. She needs options for SMS but the only option is to use Go SMS pro which is free but the other party has to have it installed too to see the emojis I think.
I have the app on my Z10 but don't use it as my new Main phone is a Q and I swore off Android apps for it

I get a little box with an "x" in it for emojis that my Z30 won't render. I can tell iPhone users on twitter because of those squares with x's when they load their tweets with emojis. Lol

Is this another one of Apple's stupid cross-platform incompatibility where not even a single emoticon can be displayed on receiving end of the SMS?
Or is this a universal thing? Can't you see emoticons from Android, etc? I know you can definitely see the ones sent from Windows phones.
My wife has been asking me why she can't tell if the sender is smiling or frowning in their text messages. She is getting question mark in a diamond shaped black character.

Is there any workaround to fix this?

they are improving the emoji-unicode rendering. I read recently that they've able to add 16(?) additional emoji rendering for 10.3. Don't quote me on this. The details is somewhat vague for me.

I think it's absolutely ridiculous that we don't have emojis in SMS. So tired of the diamonds with question marks. It's embarrassing to have to explain to people that I can't see what they're sending me. The whole SMS application on BB10 needs work. Constantly freezing up on me, and the only way to fix it is to restart my phone. Please get on this, BlackBerry.

BlackBerry 10 is very good at many things, but emoticon compatibility is not one of them. I suggest you either wait for 10.3 (and hope for the best), or go out and purchase a phone which is not BlackBerry (if you really need to see the emoticons/emojis). :/

Looking good enough for now, they're viewable and send able so that's good. I have all my most used programmed into my Z30 with the substitution option. You can copy and paste them as well though.

Sure, BB can't do this, go buy something else, it's not like we are asking for something impossible. I am glad you are not BB's PR or Spokesperson.
More and more people use shorter and shorter text messages, sometimes they respond with an emoticon or emoji or whatever you guys call it, this is actually pretty sad, but it's reality, so when you get a single character response from someone to your question, or earlier text, it is extremely frustrating to see <?> character. Basically It is not asking too much that BB comply and keep up with the trend. If they can't beat Apple at least they should do something to work with them and their millions of users.

    BB to BB?
How about iPhone to BB? I don't even care if we can send them, I am talking about receiving and displaying them.
Personally I don't use it, but wife complains about it when she chats with her friends who are mostly on iPhones (like I said it seems to work with SMS from WP7). So while she loves her Z10, she hates to see those nasty black icons on incoming SMS.

Yup iPhone to BlackBerry works as well l, to be honest that's how I realized that it worked. Android works too if you're wondering so basically if an emoji is on the text than it shows up on both my Z30 and father's Z10. They work perfectly.

Word substitution and copy pasting is not an acceptable solution, by any means, no user should have to do it. BlackBerry should actually do something.

Seriously and it wouldn't be hard at all to just incorporate the emoji the way that the Facebook app does it for messages in the HUB. Bojan from Whine made emoji available on his app the same way Facebook did, so I'm sure BlackBerry can as well with ease. I'm thinking they well with the official 10.3 or at the very latest 10.3.1 it'll be ridiculous by then though.
