Is the only way to close headless/background running apps by using the device monitor app? I'm trying to maximize battery life

Well, that's the only way i know how. But remember, you can always disable the 'Run in background' permission if you don't want an app to run headless.

Read the OP again, he knows that already. He's asking if there is an alternative way of closing a headless running app besides having to do it via device monitor, which there isn't.
