What phone. Do you have wifi? A data plan?

Edit:see you have the Z10. There is a text message button or you can access texts thru the Hub. Who is your cell carrier?

    First off, welcome to CrackBerry!
Please update your profile to include device, carrier, and location. Makes it easier for others to help you.

Two main ways to send a Text Message:

    1. In the Hub, select Compose in the bottom bar. Select Text Messages.

    2. In the Hub, drag screen from left to right or tap bottom left button, then select Text Messages from accounts on left. Select Compose in bottom bar.

Can't help you with the "want it to be free" part... That boils down to your service plan, no?

If you don't get reception, you probably can't text. I'm pretty sure texting is dependent on a carrier network. If you have wifi BBM or any other instant messaging app should work, but that's dependent on the people that you want to message with having the same service.

You can also tap the magnifying glass at the bottom of your screen to launch the search, in the search box type in the word text and your first option will be to compose text and you can do it right from that window.

Check out "TextNow". That one was pretty good when I needed it. (It's an android app so you'll need to sideload it)

It sounds like Skype is your best bet. But it will cost you a little.
    "
Send text messages directly from Skype. It’s quick, simple and especially great value for texting abroad.
Easily type messages from the comfort of your keyboard. No more embarrassing autocorrect and confusing txt spk.
You’ll need Skype Credit to send text messages at really low rates."
