For some reason I only managed to remove the "sys.android.shell".
It seems that there's something in the device that restricts "sys.android" to be deleted. if this bar file is protected, now I'm thinking that BlackBerry is using this runtimes to do something within it's core OS.

Also you are correct yessuz that Endomondo has a dependency with android, I noticed the bar to be "com.endomondo.android", same thing with my Bible app which is YouVersion "com.sirma.mobile.bible.android" (I guess).

I will not re-install the sys.android.shell for the meantime and observe if I could live with it. All this time, I thought I don't benefit from android running on top of BlackBerry, now I'm half convinced. I'm using YouVersion daily, for now I can't remove it, but I'll definitely try to remove these android dependent apps then remove the sys.android bar whenever I have enough time.

One thing for sure, I'm learning and I like it!

I don't last using the phone without the android shell, YouVersion works fine without it, endomondo didn't launch totally, and noticed lags everytime I started to navigate and open endomondo.

Now android shell is back in my device.

Because one of the features is that we can run Android ported apps? Which you were also doing?

Because many "native" apps are Android ports and have huge stack of android in it, therefore depend on android runtime.

If it's just only for apps (native apps specifically), then it's fine, but would it be a different story, if the android runtime has something to do as well with BlackBerry 10 OS?

I'm not against Android, but if it find its way deep within the core of BlackBerry OS, then BlackBerry focuses on security, that will prove that Android is building its integrity.

BTW, anyone who attempted to remove or at least disable the android runtime on their BB10?

True, but I didn't know that at first, just recently as I continue with this thread.

I'll try to remove these known android ported apps on my device (YouVersion and Endomondo) and give it a try to remove the Android runtime bars. I'll get back to you guys, if i'll be successful this time.

If anybody also knows of which among the BlackBerry Stock apps are still android ported, please let me know, i'll try to remove that as well. Good thing that restoring a BlackBerry device was as easy as a coffee break. Less worry if something fails.

Update, even after uninstalling non-stock apps, the android runtime bars still can't be removed through sachesi.

you can use Sachesi for that:

1. open Sachesi
2. connect your device to PC via USB
3. click 'Install' tab in Sachesi
4. press the 'refresh' button --> all installed apps are shown now
5. mark these 2 bars: 'sys.android' + 'sys.android.shell'
6. press the trash can on the upper left side of the screen and wait for the process for deleting to finish
7. disconnect your device and reboot

I didn't find any trash can on the upper left of sachesi!!

Anyone have any luck with this? I'd like to remove Android Runtime to save battery on my device - I don't have any Android apps on my device, and only depend on the native apps (Remember, BBM, email, etc.).

I think it is, the Android player appears in the Memory tab of Device Monitor even if you have no Android apps installed.

If you activate your BlackBerry on a BES server using a Workspace only provisioning there will be no Android runtime but that is the only way I know how to disable.

Have you installed blackberry android runtime from BlackBerry world before? If you have, there is a way to disable android runtime and allow your phone to run pure bb10.

So I think I found a work around or temp fix for the freezing and glitches...

The culprit for me seems to be an something from android. I assume an app, but not sure. Anyway here is a way to shut down the android runtime and keep it off until you need it.


Go to BlackBerry World->my world->my apps & games->installed. Scrolling down to the 'BlackBerry Runtime for Android' app. Select it and hit the open bar. It will open a runtime window that will say 'initializing, please wait...'. Leave it alone for about 15-20 seconds and the window will minimise. You can close it down now as the runtime is shutdown as well it will have forced all running and background android apps to shut down. Now if you don't open any android apps the runtime will remain off as well as all my installed android apps that do whatever they do in the background. Anyway, no freezes or glitches etc so far for 3 days. I still use android apps but when I'm done with them I just perform that routine to shut off the runtime and all is good.

Also I noticed my battery if amazing again now that I am running pure bb10. Down only 50% throughout the work day.

Also another helper I bookmarked the 'BlackBerry runtime for Android' app in BlackBerry world so it shows up right at the bottom of the app when you go into my world. Quicker access.
