Just clued on that from the lock screen with 10.2 and the preview capacity, you can delay an R in BBM for smaller BBM replys. A potential Easter Egg for a BB10 owner ; for some no doubt.
I hope this is correct, as I am under the influence and the only thing savings this post from being incoherent is this damn nice Z10 keyboard.

This was always true by view the message from the chats screen inside of bbm. Again works for only short messages.

    Nice find!
On Legacy OS you could turn on chat history, go to the chat you don't want to open, open the chat history and read the whole reply without opening the chat. No R whatsoever till you opened the chat itself.

There's was a similar thread about the 'cheating' the R, and how it's losing its value now that Android and iOS (and apparently also BB10) allows you to 'peek' at a portion of the message. I disagree with that notion. If anything, seeing an R now, more than ever, should let a sender know that the recipient has consciously decided fully open the message and is very likely to soon act on it.

The iPhone pull down menu and the lock screen let's them see all their bbm msgs (multiple msgs even from one person) without showing a R.

    We've fell behind

Why can't BlackBerry just give us an option not to send read statuses?

It would make the whole system useless, unless instead of sending an R it sent an N or something to show that there is No receipts.

You can also see the small amount of the message in the hub without activating the r.

It seems to only send when you've actually opened the msg
