If you're installing from the raw APK files:

One possible way is to look through the list of permissions for anything "google", usually for their push notification service. You'll need an Android app - Advanced Permission Manager - which lets you view and/or modify the permissions of the APK file before you install it.

Stick with Amazon app store apps vs Google play apps. This works somewhat although you usually won't get the latest version of the app.
