We were transferring files from a Q10 to my Z30. The files transferred fine and you could open them, but once they were closed they were nowhere to be found. The Z30 has no sim or sd card. That shouldn't make a difference should it?

I had the same issue. The files were transferred on the micro SD card without having one in the phone.
If you open the file from the pop-up message after the transfer is finished you should see the micro-SD card symbol in the top corner of the screen.
If you put a micro-SD card in your phone you will find the files on that card.
    I found 2 solutions:
1- use a micro SD memory card
    2- reinstall the OS.

This is what happened in my case. I hope this helps you.

As I said in my post , I have no SD card in the phone. I would have assumed the files would go to internal storage.

I didn't have a SD card in my phone neither. The phone put the files I received via bluetooth on the SD card that didn't exist. It was a bug.
BBVE saw a SD card in my phone also. But I didn't have any SD card.
If this is not your case, ignore my post.

Interesting. BBVE sees a non existant SD card in the device information window, but when tested realizes there is no card.

why not just do a search through the file manager? You know the name of the file, so you should be able to find it.

I thought the default was to go the download folder on the device, but i could be wrong.

That's the thing. I searched. The files can't be found.

If you make a new transfer and you open it from the pop-up message you will also see the SD card symbol on the top right sf the the screen. At least that was my case.
Apparently you have the same issue I had. You. Can use two sollutions:
1 - buy an SD card - the easy one but it won't remove the bug. When you put the SD card in all the files you transferred and could not find will be on the SD card. I know, it's strange.
2 - install a fresh new OS. I did a security wipe but it stuck at 97% after 3 days and I used link to do it again.
    Good luck.
