Why you text messages when you have BBM? With that said I clear mine often, no reason, just don't need them for any reason.
Because most people do not have BlackBerry phones, and really don't feel comfortable dictating that all of my clients, family, and friends download and use Messenger, for my convenience.

I never had any actual problem but I did notice that it started to load slower and slower when I would text some one that had a lot of messages.
I just loaded 10.3 and that solved that problem.

Makes sense really. I would like to see messages more than a certain number of days get archived.

Hmmm, I have never deleted anything. I've had some pretty long text and BBM exchanges, but I'm not sure if the very first messages are accessible.

The memory and processing demand for text messages is relatively insignificant compared to apps. I highly doubt it'll noticeably slow down your device. I don't purposely delete messages to speed up my device. Uninstalling apps and releasing cache memory are my first options.

I never delete text conversations. I currently have text conversations extending back to March, 2013, which is when I switched to BlackBerry 10.

I have BBM conversations that extend back until BBM was released cross-platform, which is when I really started using BBM.

I haven't noticed any loss of performance.

I really don't think it causes overall system slowdowns, just slowness with opening some particularly long conversations.

Personally I delete when the conversation is over, which is usually right away, consequently my txt section is always empty. What I found interesting the other day was, while watching one of those Border shows, the guard(s) were suspicious of the traveler because his phone had no txt messages to speak of.

I have a similar text conversation going back to when I first got my Z10 in July of 2013. It's the one with my wife with well over 1000 texts going back and forth.

There was a time during either the 10.1 or the early 10.2 leaks where it was slow opening the text app, but that was soon fixed.

No problems since. It open right up.

I've got a few other conversations going, but they are much shorter.
