I read in a magazine that Huawei going to develop is own OS.

Tired of the experience Android, updates rules to much, they plan to replace it in less than 3 years. And Huawei is only the first. Samsung have keep Tizen for the same reason too.

What is it mean? Maybe the android golden age is near the end? The things could be less easy in future.

    Means nothing....

Samsung has tried to push Tizen for three years now.... it doesn't even register marketshare.

I'm sure Huawei like all Android OEM would love to have an option, and one that they themselves control.... they all wish that they were Apple.

If Samsung, Microsoft, (and BlackBerry) can't pull it off, I don't see Huawei being able to do so.
Do you remember the saturation level of advertising for Android when it first came out? Wonder what that cost?

Sony Xperia X can run Sailfish OS and Jolla+Sony planning to bring Sailfish OS image in June end so Xperia X phone can be flashed.
Tizen what i think that Samsung at this point is not ready to gamble thus holding back to Tizen upon 3rd rate phones.
Until the Chipmakers and Google are comfortably promoting each other there is no end of Android.
Still the world deserves at least one mobile OS other than iOS & Android.

Jolla has announced all sorts of things to keep their funding from ending... but where are those things? Where is the Tablet, where is the Turning Phone, where are all those devices in India?

Tizen isn't being held back, Samsung is running out of markets that have never heard of Android or Apps... the only places Tizen has been available.

There is no conspiracy here.... It's simply too late to try and overcome the head start that Google and Apple had. Sadly BlackBerry and Microsoft weren't paying attention in 2007. It's not about the OS, it's about the ecosystems... and no one has the ability to create a new ecosystem in 2017. Not until there is some major technology shift.

The problem with samsung or any other top Android OEM is that they may "fool" customers into buying their products, but will not stop them from returning them.

The average consumer doesn't know which OS his phone runs. They know it's a samsung or an LG or a Huawei, but most have no idea about the OS, let alone the OS version.

It has gotten to this state because people realised that no matte what phone they bought there is a 99% chance it will have all the apps due to 99% of the market being iOS or Android. So when the average consumer picks up a new phone he/she will expect all the apps to be there because that's how iOS/Android has spoiled them into thinking. Anything less is a no go.

So when the average consumers will walk into a store, he will still probably buy the newest Samsung, but one home and realizing that his new Samsung doesn't have the apps he wants he will return the phone most likely and get a new one that has the apps he wants.

Yes you're right.. but who said they will not support themselve their own version of majors apps? Their are nearly the first mobile manufacturer in the world, in units sold. Every device manufacturer can do that is own ecosystem and support it.

It the same as with BB10: most services including whatsapp, facebook, netflix, snapchat have NO public APIs for a complete experience. At this current stage in the market, very few app developers will jump in to fully support a completely new platform; they will wait to see if the platform gains some traction and then jump on board.

A new OS without a rich ecosystem becomes a market failure AKA bb10.

*After committing mistakes and setbacks things have changed and finally Jolla has moved to licensing of OS which was/is the only viable option for them specially when vendors are not supporting anything except Android.
And we must not ignore this fact that even after five years Jolla is still alive and progressing. (Unlike BB10/WP who gave up simply)

Tizen is not able to move coz Samsung is afraid of BADA !

***No it's not a conspiracy. It's hard fact ! No chipmaker is willing to support anything other than Android.

That's where you're wrong. They can't just up and release someone else's app on their OS without express permission. That's where lawsuits come from. Intellectual property laws exist for a reason.

If Samsung makes a Netflix Tizen app and Netflix didn't allow it, no good will come of it. You think Blackberry couldn't have made its own version of all the apps that were missing at BB10 launch? Of course they could have, but doing so would have led them to be sued into bankruptcy in 2013.

I think any change.. will be a major change to a new technology, not just a different OS that does basically the same things as existing mature technologies.

don't discount microsoft as yet. it just launched chat app that may change the landscape. I do like the chaps trail and error and eventually get it right... best luck for MS. (close system is much secure and easy to control)

I'm actually not, but most people think it's dead, so it looked good.
If Microsoft just managed 'almost as good' as Android and iOS, but managed full and complete PC integration, they would do very, very well in the 1st world market. Assuming they did the correct marketing.

The question being: can every device manufacturer create and massage a GOOD ecosystem?

Everyone has an ecosystem. Not everyone has an ecosystem that can move devices.

it depends. if Gov want keep it secrete or limited supply, you will have demand but no marketing (except internal controlled - "if I tell you I have to kill you... and I don't want to kill you, so I wouldn't tell you...").

and a time machine to go back to 2005/6 to get BlackBerry working on a new OS in time to be competitive.

Everyone here forgets the time element. The spring of 2003 was way too late to try and release a new Smartphone OS with any chance of success.

Devs don't want to support a 3rd OS. They count X man hours devoted to such as hours away from improving their apps on IOS/Android that has a user base they can effectively monetize. You can temporarily subsidize such efforts as BB and MS have done in the past but its not a long-term strategy as those devices are super low margin and not flagship devices that can absorb such costs.

There have been a number of alternative desktop OSs over the last 30 years, the most successful examples being OS/2 and BeOS. But despite being excellent OSs, they don't exist anymore, because developers looked and said "this is nice, but there's really nothing that it does that's significantly better than Windows or OSX, and those already have tens or hundreds of millions of customers." The quality of the OS simply was irrelevant because there was no ecosystem support - and trying to ride on someone else's ecosystem (as OS/2 tried to do, and as BB10 tried to do) is only a longer path to pushing your customers to the competitor you're riding on.

And as Ment says, developers don't want a bunch of OSs to support - that's not a cost-effective use of their time. There are only 2 desktop OSs that make any money (Windows and OSX) and only 2 mobile OSs that make any money (Android and iOS), and until some technology comes along that is somehow a huge leap forward and does things that Android and iOS simply can't do and can't quickly be made to do, then nothing really stands any chance of displacing them.

Note that nothing has disrupted Windows and OSX on the desktop in 30+ years - a new category of device had to be created (mobile devices - smartphones & tablets) in order to build a new platform, and while that ate into the desktop volume, it still didn't change the OSs that run on desktops - it just meant that many people didn't use desktops as much.

Android and iOS are pretty secure for at least a decade - who knows what might come along in that time? - but no other "me too" platform is going to displace them. If Huawei stops making Android phones, there are dozens of other manufacturers who will happily step up and take those sales, and Huawei will simply lose marketshare - it won't make a dent in Android sales or influence.
