Is it true? Such as using a black wallpaper or the default blue one?

Some say this is true but why walk around all day with a totally black wallpaper when you can have a little color in your life? Carry a second battery maybe? I used to do that with my Z10.

In fact I have several I can sell. I think I will go post them now!

By design of the screen you should in theory get better battery life with a darker background. I haven't seen anyone really test it to see how true that is though.

In theory if you have an AMOLED screen like those on the Q10 or Z30, then a black wall paper will save you battery because the pixels will essentially be off.

If there is any color which causes the pixels to turn on, or you have an LCD screen like on the Z10, then I'm not sure it will save you much but it is possible.

The reason dark colours, like the dark theme or dark wallpapers, save power on some devices is because they use AMOLED screens. This is the Q10 and Z30 of the currently released devices. The others use LCD displays.

LCD displays have a single backlight source (that may be several lights) which is filtered through the LCD panel. Backlight intensity can affect battery life, but not the colours displayed.

In an OLED display each colour element of each pixel is a tiny LED. The more that are on, and the brighter each one is, the more power is used. OLED displays also "wear" with usage, so a darker display leads to a longer display life, but again only for the Q10 and Z30.

Z10 it makes absolutely no difference as LCD screens use a constant backlight for the entire screen and selectively block out the colours of each pixel. The 'blocking' action of the LCD does not change its power consumption for different colours so you may as well go bright and bold!

Z30 and Q10 use AMOLED where each subpixel is a tiny LED so when showing black, that portion of the screen will be off. I think this is why the Q10 defaults to a black theme over the light one of the z10. The more of your screen that's black on an AMOLED screen the more power you save.

    Not necessary on a Z10

dark costs no battery juice (blacks) if you have a OLED screen like Z30 and Q10. That is all. Because it shuts down the pixel.

Does that hold true for the classic as well? Does the classic have a LED screen?

I used to set black wallpapers, color wallpapers, and I did not realize differently how much energy it took in each case. I suppose we should set wallpapers on our devices as the way we want to use.

I see logic in this, and have always used a dark themed wallpaper. I just hope now for a all black theme across the OS.
