Is there any chance of starting a crowdfunding campaign, in which the BB10 community would gather funds for updates of the browser and android runtime, or any other important functions, which will die out the quickest? Would BB agree to something like this?

    Let's do the math.

    Let's say that:
    - BlackBerry has 0.3 percent of the smartphone market
    - A third will want to donate
    - the smartphone market is a billion users
    - the average donation would be 15 euros

    Which means that :
    - BlackBerry users are 3 million
    - 1 million will want to donate
    - the total would be 15 million.

    Don't know.

I think it is a lot of money to update few apps.

I would definitely donate if it means they would bring back PTG. I'd even settle with "stop EOLing their products".

So 30% donation, that is rather high I'd be surprised if it was a 3% rate.

Judging from the hubbub around app giveaways on CB, that seems about a third too generous.

Android Runtime can't be updated anyway - this has been covered at length. Most likely not permitted by OHA agreement.

    Conite:

It is unfortunate the OHA agreement apparently bars updating the Android run time. Having said that I would hope that BlackBerry tries to deal with that issue to at least get us into android 5 specification.

That would at least provide us with some breathing space.

Incidently, I certainly appreciate your sage support and advice on these BlackBerry forums.

No source at all. These are simply guesses, maybe I didn't make that clear.
Come to think of it, 30% probably is too much.

What should be done to save BB10 is create a petition demanding BBRY to open source the defunct OS.

Crowd funding would not raise enough money and BBRY likely has no interest in maintaining BB10.

Depends if they can open-source QNX at the same time.

If so, there's no reason not to.

However, if they can't/won't opensource the bedrock, then all we would get out of open source BB10 is Cascades, which is extensively tied to Qt4.

Make the plans and sell them so that we can make our own cases

QNX can already be gotten free for personal and academic use.

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=QNX+for+personal+use+
    use the QNX software for personal activities or for experimentation or self-training purposes, including: to extend hardware or peripheral support for the Neutrino RTOS, to develop new applications for or porting existing applications to the Neutrino RTOS or the Momentics Tools, to participate in projects at Foundry27 and to demonstrate your QNX software based system to others, provided that you do not leave copies with those who are not already licensed by QNX to use that software;
A bit more restricted than say GPL but certainly building or maintaining a non-commercial phone OS could be worked into this licence. Every user would have to explicitly get a licence rather than implicitly accept a licence.
