I had a couple questions regarding using an NFC tag on my car mount. I want to know if the NFC tag has the function that I am looking for.

    1. I know an NFC tag can turn on Bluetooth, but can I make it so that when the phone moves away from the NFC tag, Bluetooth radio automatically turns off on the phone? To reiterate, the Bluetooth radio would only be on when the NFC tag is in contact, and automatically be off when the phone is moved away from the NFC tag.

    2. I want the screen to stay on at all times when it is on the car mount. Is it possible to automatically change the display turn on time to "forever" only when it is on the car mount, and then be changed automatically back to 30second display off time when it is moved away from the car mount?

I am using a Q10 on 10.2.1, and I am happy with using a 3rd party app if I have to.

    Cheers.

As far as third party apps are concerned, someone else will have to chime on this, below is only what I know / remember about stock apps.

    1. I don't believe one can do so.

    2. At least through the included smart tags app, one cannot change the display turn on time, so again, AFAIK you cannot do that.

I think you are looking at NFC tags incorrectly, instead of viewing them as buttons, view them as events.
When you come to a place, you swipe the phone over a tag and something happens. You could have one tag in your car somewhere on the dashboard that toggles Bluetooth connectivity. Whenever you enter or leave the car, swipe the phone and that's it.

Answer to your first and second question is NO.

Phone reads tag once in proximity and then sleeps. To read it again you need to 'tap' again. So to turn BT on you will need to 'tap' tag and to switch it off you need to 'tap' it again... Smart Tags app included in the BlackBerry 10 can do this toggle.

As for the screen, there is no settings to do so. Unless there is an app to keep the screen on(like some maps do or crash cameras...)

Nfc tags are cheap, make sure you get one with larger capacity so you can play with complex scenarios, so get some and enjoy...

    1. I use profile changer to turn off bluetooth once the car BT is out of range.

You should put an NFL sticker near your mount and touch once you get into the car before you mount it.

And then again as you leave.

You can program the Bluetooth toggle and also for it to open the app "Screen Timeout".

BlackBerry 10 does not have a Never setting in screen sleep and you need a third party app.

I'm using this way (NFC tag in a mount car) for at least a year in my Z10.
Even in 10.2.1 or now in 10.3.1
Works like a charm with app SmartTag that come with OS. They turn on bluetooth, and open waze (waze even withou updates in BB version, has a option to always on screen).
I also put to not vibrate, and only phone calls to alert and disable led blinkes. All in the same NFC tag.

But you have it programmed to turn Bluetooth back off when you unmount?

I didn't think that was possible.

    Okay thanks for the replies!

Is it possible to have the same NFC tag that turns on Bluetooth to turn off Bluetooth on the second swipe?

Yes. Just use toggle instead of on or off.

I find NFC tags are more annoying than they are worth until we have the ability to use them when the phone is locked and screen off. I have a bunch but quickly stopped using them because of this. The only time it is worthwhile is if you have one tag do multiple things at the same time....

    I don't see toggle as a choice.

Tags are cheap. You could put a tag on the phone mount to turn on BT and then use a tag on your keychain to turn it off.

All I have on the tag on my keychain is to turn off wifi for security reasons. I don't have to go through the menu. I just slap a tag and it is off.

I have 2 NFC Tags in my Car. Both are to connect to Bluetooth Hands free devices (1 car stereo and 1 in ear). This way, If I have people in the car and I want to use the phone, I connect the Bluetooth through NFC to my ear piece. If i am by my self in the car, I can connect it to the Car stereo bluetooth.

I do wish they'd make NFC available when the phone is locked though.

It seems we are halfway there since some NFC actions can be done when locked. Look at the bottom of the NFC menu for more info.

OK, I found this page. The setup is a bit odd. After create, you go to "smart triggers", then pick the function (bluetooth for example), then add, then select off/on/toggle. That is five layers deep.

Thanks. Now I have an excuse to buy a mount for my phone. I was in a Lyft where the driver had a mount behind the A pillar. That should make it harder for the cops to spot it. I have a Bluetooth for hands free, but I try to maintain a low profile.

That still doesn't work with the phone locked or screen off does it?

There's an app in appworld called "Screen Timeout" i believe. its an Android port but it does the job by keeping the screen on when set up.

    Cheers

EDIT - Sorry everyone, i corrected the name of the app above. Link to it is here:

I haven't tried it, but I assume at the moment the phone has to be awake to toggle. But if you cradle the phone, wouldn't you want it awake?

Yes I wrote about this in post #6 on the thread but the only problem is that you once the app opens you still need to press "Start" and then after it turns on the feature you need to press "Minimize" or you can just close it to an active frame.

So you can have it completely automatic as you would need a few button pushes but you could get the NFC Tag to open the app to save a few seconds.
