By the way, I shifted from all those os's I mentioned above to my z10 because I believe bbos 10 is better than them despite all the reviews we've been reading in the past few years. I bought the very first BlackBerry Passport in the Philippines because of this belief also.

You down load via Play Store. You patch it using Play Service Patcher.
    Why should I do that?

Play Service Patcher has its own download menu. Even the old version GMaps Patcher 1.3.1 also has download menu and I had used it to download apps from Play Store and patched them.

Edit: I downloaded the apk by another way and patched it. So it's just a few extra steps though.

    Joeragan,
Easier to download the apk from this forum or cocland.com. A lot of people have patched the latest coc apk already and uploaded the same in this forum and outside. I find patching too complicated for me that is why I just download whatever I can. Search the forums. They are very helpful but you you need to do your own digging. We can help you but I assure you that it will be worth your time and effort to do so. You will learn a lot.

I have done my own digging. I previously used GMaps Patcher 1.3.1 previously to download apps and patched it without bothering other people or searching whether someone posted it somewhere in the Internet. Now that I found the download function seems to not working I was simply asking for advise. I see in the Play Service Patcher thread there are a few other users who unable to download package too but I don't see anyone replying to them. I tried both version 1.3.1 and 1.4 but got the same error, I know for sure version 1.3.1 was working previously on my same PC.

Interesting. The "Download" tab is the one tab I never looked at. Probably because I've never read Cobalt endorsing or recommending that method to acquire apps from Playstore. Maybe I missed him doing that. I'll stick with the tried and true reliable way through Cobalt's Playstore app.
    To each their own.

Oh I love this question about Android apps eating up battery in the background. What I'm telling you now is backed up by the Blackberry Developer Site and is valid for ANY Android app on your device:

From the Blackberry developer docs about the Blackberry Android runtime (Jelly Bean):
    * Apps can run services only while the user runs them, either in full screen or in thumbnail mode.
    * https://developer.blackberry.com/and..._software.html

What does that mean? The Blackberry Android runtime does NOT allow Android apps to run any services in the background. Period. As soon as the screen goes off (battery saving mode, sleep mode), ANY Android app will stop working in the background. A good example to explain this may be light in your fridge. Everytime you open the door of your fridge, the light is on, right? So we must assume, that the light in the fridge is permanently on? No, it's not. It's triggered when you open the door and it goes off when you close the door.

The only way to get an Android app to run permanently in the background is to implement Blackberry Headless mode. This must be requested from blackberry, and usually those apps are then ONLY avaliable on Blackberry World as a ported Android app (an example is Skype). All other Android apps that you download from anywhere else do NOT incorporate Headless mode and CANNOT run in the background.

Now I already hear all the "specialists" that are saying "Hey, but I'm running task manager xyz and there are a lot of services running on my device and I cleaned them and now everything is great"

Well, that simply isn't true. Running a task manager app is just like opening the door on the fridge. The light is now on. But if you close the taskmanager and the device goes to sleep, all services are stopped again.

The second thing that you should know about background services is, that against the common believe, they do not RUN in the background. They register a trigger in the Android runtime. The registering service itself is not running. Now if the Android runtime receives an Intent, it will look if a services was registered for the intent and THEN will start the service. The service will do its work (i.e. sync data) and then close again. On a Blackberry device, this will only happen if:

    a) The device is NOT in sleepmode
    b) The app is open OR running in an active Frame

If those conditions are not met, nothing happens. No services is started.

And finally to answer your question about Play Services: If you install Play Services for the first time, it will sync a lot of data and index your android apps. This will initially use some battery.l After that, you won't notice any changes in battery life.
I am by no means a "specialist " but how do you explain playstore giving a notification that an app update is available while the device is in "sleep mode" (eg on a desk chaeging) and neither playstore nor the particular app open nor in active frame?
I think at least some android apps run I remember Skype giving notifications while it was closed but I haven't used it since 10.2 so something may have changed. But this playstore example suggests maybe the runtime not behaving how BlackBerry expects.

Perhaps it isn't the app itself but the "website" sending out the notifications. Just a thought.

This can't work as a firewall will block incoming data if it isn't solicited for from the inside.

Cobalt's explanation highlights a weak area in ART. For banking and other apps which only need to run when they are actively used, it is quite ok. However, ART is less favourable for apps which need to run permanently in the background, like chat-, mail- and calendar apps, newsfeed readers and so on.

They need an active frame to keep them awake. Better then to use a native BB10 app for those in stead.

The runtime does behave as expected.

The update notification in Play Store is not provided by a service running in the background. Play Store uses AlarmManager to trigger the update notification.

From the docs: AlarmManager (AlarmManager | Android Developers)
"This class provides access to the system alarm services. These allow you to schedule your application to be run at some point in the future. When an alarm goes off, the Intent that had been registered for it is broadcast by the system, automatically starting the target application if it is not already running."

Play Store simply sets an alarm in the Android Runtime. If the alarm goes of, the service is triggered to run and to look for updates. On a Blackberry device, an alarm can only trigger/start a services if the device is not in sleepmode. If you keep the device in sleepmode all the time, you will never get an update notification.

The "sleep mode" is where confusion occur. My interpretation is that the device screen is off. I'm the cases where I see app updates from playstore I wake up in the morning and there is a update notification waiting when I pick it up.
By the explanation the "alarm" can only trigger the app if the device is not in sleep mode. Then there shouldn't be a notification waiting for me in the morning. At best it should come in after I wake the device.

Maybe notification are handled in a special way by the runtime. But the rules stay the same. No service can run if the app is not open in full screen or in tumbnail mode. You can also verify that behaviour if you use my Blackberry Logger.

Has anyone tried to patch the Kuna app? For the Kuna porch-light camera and intercom system.

I tried the app before I bought the porch light and it wouldn't open, the app got to the first screen and froze. Patched it with the Google App patcher thing and it seemed to work fine.

Bought the device, installed it, the app still works fine enough, except for one thing.... notifications are not being pushed to hub when someone is detected by the motion sensor.

I checked the permissions in the Google ID app and the notification setting is on but nevertheless I'm not being notified on either my Passport or Q10. Works fine on my Nexus 7.

Can anyone help out with this, provide some guidance on what to check?

Is mobile data turned on in the Android runtime?

Works as expected. But caution. If the map area is to large (depends on zoom factor) the map will not download.
