Hi,

I was just wondering guys, would it be possible to install the BB10 OS on another device? And if it were possible (in theory) how would one approach this? Sorry if this question was already asked, I searched, but nothing popped up.

Can you explain why you might think it is? All devices vary. If you have ever tried to install the OS from on model to another, an OS for an STL100-3 on a -1 you would know how quickly the hardware and software become incompatible.

I don't know if it is possible or not but the question is interesting.
I use to have a HTC hd2 aka Leo bought with windows mobile(yes i'm a 40 years old dinausarus) and I installed android and a full Linux on it.
Paspport is an amazing device with high spec hardware so why not.
I sometimes use terminal on it for fun so why not a full Linux port with kde...

Actually a valid question for a non techie. After all, one can install Linux on a PC, Sailfish on some Android phones.

It's because some parts of driver library for components is closed sourced/proprietary. Therefore even if BB wanted, it couldn't put out a universal camera, radio, NFC etc compatibility into an OS, it must be tailored to the device with the appropriate license.

I don't think this was a silly question based on BlackBerry MD's saying they'd be open to another manufacturer running BlackBerry 10 on their devices.

However that's out of our hands.

Many of you are confusing the act of porting with the act of installing. Given the right information, tools and knowledge could BB10 be made to run on an Android, Apple or Windows phone? Sure. Many versions of Linux were built to install on PC hardware, and as someone who was around in the early days and did it, even then it wasn't easy.

Installing open OS on open hardware is more easily done, Sailfish on some Android phones for example.

BlackBerry has a security overview available on their website and part of it has to do with authentication of the hardware. When you boot a BlackBerry it handshakes with BlackBerry's servers and the hardware is authenticated as not tampered with. So, the hardware would have to be keyed with a known BlackBerry device to make it through the boot up process.

Therefore, it's probably not possible to successfully install the software on different hardware.

Its actually very easy to install windows on mac and have a dual boot computer that fully runs both operating systems like I have it you just have to partition it...

Bad example...

Try to install the PS4 software onto an Xbox One. It might be possible, if you run enough coffee through enough programmers to hammer out a port (hardware support, recreating the userland, etc.) , but even then, unless one manages to figure out how to open up the Xbox One system internals and make it work, all one has is software that won't install.

On top of that, BlackBerry has a vested interest in making sure its system internals remain impenetrable to any third party, hence stuff like this.

Actually you can run Mac on an Intel pc since there are Intel based macs and visa versa.

Let's say, if all drivers were there and BlackBerry didn't blacklist etc. Then yes eventually it would be possible to run BlackBerry 10 on other devices.

BB10 is great but my old lumia had a much better hardware.

Awful example.

Macs can run Windows via Dualboot, etc.

Windows machines, aka non-mac machines, can't run Mac because Apple has the process for installing their OS's locked down tight and only develop their drivers and backend software for specific models and units.

This is similar for phones where only certain hardware can run certain OS's since they've got the specific hardware made for the device.

Plus the BlackBerry core kernel firmware isn't transferable nor installable by users, so we can't put the OS onto other phones as all of our autoloaders and bootloaders need to hook into that hardware.

BlackBerry10 is very secure, so don't expect yourself or anyone non-dev to be able to bypass all of that and get it up and running on foreign hardware!

(foreign meaning non-BlackBerry)
