Why is bb10's built-in dictionary so limited? I get red lines under words regularly, but when I second-guess myself and copy/paste the word into Google, I'm always correct that "yes, this is a common word with a dictionary entry, and without a misspelling by me." Right now my Q10 is telling me that 'misspelling' isn't a word, but it apparently has been since 1807! How expensive is it to license a halfway-decent dictionary database?

I shouldn't have to continuously add items to my dictionary, just to have to do it again when I wipe my phone or install a leak. Every other mobile OS (and desktop OS) has a great dictionary, why doesn't BB10?

Misspelling appears as a suggestion on the keyboard but it does appear with a red line, I've noticed that with lots of words, a bit awkward.

If you use a simple and small vocabulary, it's not an issue. But rarer or more complex words are often marked red. Especially compound words, plural forms of words, or words with suffixes (now it's telling me 'suffixes' isn't a word).

Can you provide a list of 10 words that show as misspelled on your end?

Then other users can try the same exact words as you and we can see if the problem is widespread?

In the examples I've seen on this thread, it doesn't show with a red underline, suffixes, misspell.

I have 0 issue with any of the words found here:

Yeah me neither. None of the words you've mentioned or that that list had show up with a red line. I'm stumped as to what's causing it on your phone.

The reason predicted words sometimes aren't in the dictionary is because the word prediction isn't based on a dictionary. That's how it can predict things like callsigns: VE3UIL. Which is pretty cool.

The dictionary is just a dictionary, some are better than others in different areas.

Guys, this is a freshly installed stock 10.2.1 just for you. Same issues as 10.3. Someone is full of it in this thread, and it isn't me. See the attached photo.

Ps, I never stated that I was talking about predicted words. I'm talking about red underlines.

Let's see your screenshots, because unless this is a Verizon-only issue, I don't believe you're not seeing the same red underline that I'm seeing.

The red underline only appears when a word you have typed is not in your Personal Dictionary which is used to predict words on your keyboard. If you tap the underlined word, it gives you alternative words which the prediction 'thinks ' you might have meant instead. Or you can add it to the "dictionary ". If you want to see the words in your Personal Dictionary, go to device settings, language and input, spell check and edit personal dictionary. The red lines everybody is showing here are squiggly lines. The spell check is a solid red line, if I remember correctly. There is no built-in dictionary, as in Websters, etc.

So have you added those words to your personal dictionary, or not? I mean, I've got the most recent Verizon 10.2.1 OS. I haven't added any words to my dictionary, and I never will because I wipe my phone too often (and I'm only a couple of months from Passport release).

So does BlackBerry put different dictionaries into different phones? Does Verizon only allow the worst dictionary available? What's going on here?

Excuse me, why does that matter? All I'm saying is that BB10 is missing a ton of words from the dictionary. Then you said something untrue and I refuted your point by explaining how the red squiggly underline works. The black solid underline actually appears with every word, I hadn't noticed before.

Look, why can't BB10 have a good dictionary? Adding user entries solves nothing unless you can backup and restore user-added entries.

My device's help says : "Lorsque le correcteur orthographique est activ, les fautes d'orthographe sont soulignes en rouge en cours de saisie."

Which means : red line = misspelled.

It would be nice if BlackBerry had a good built-in dictionary. Spell checking is only one use. It would also be useful to be able to look up the definition of a word by holding and touching the word until an option to define the word pops up.

    Plural of "suffix" is "suffices".

Mis-spelling and call-sign need to be hyphenated.

    Problem solved.
