You sell the devices for more than it costs to make them. You sell software that works on devices. Apple does OK with this model.

But no developer was remotely interested in supporting a third ecosystem. Back in 2013, they could already reach 95% of the entire global market with 2 apps. Now it's 99.9%.

At the time BlackBerry offered to port apps for free and even offered to support the app afterward - still no takers.

Similarly, Microsoft showered developers with hundreds of millions of dollars and got nowhere.

No, that's not Apple's model. Apple has a consumer lifestyle of products it sells around complete ecosystem.

BlackBerry model was selling devices at cost or loss with a single version SaaS mobile OS that relied on a proprietary data plan as monthly subscription.

There wasn't anything that anyone could do for BlackBerry Limited to make BB10 successful. If all that was lacking was just economic resources, Microsoft could have used the spare change in Bill Gates sofa cushions.

BlackBerry Limited could have chosen the Apple model but would have quickly expired. It's profits were in the data plans and SaaS monthly revenues.

Why do you think original founders left the company? They left because they knew that BB10 ecosystem was a lousy knockoff ecosystem attempt. There wasn't any consumer data for BlackBerry to harvest to replace their monthly revenues. If BB10 had no competition, ZERO, no Android/iOS, maybe it would have survived. But, for what reason? We already had BBOS model. That's it !!!!! Had BB10 users just paid extra $25/month for the BB10 ecosystem as delivered........

If Microsoft couldn't do it, there is no way the hiring a few more reps and doing a some better marketing and advertising was going to change BlackBerry odds.

Sadly I see their UEM and Automotive business going much the same way.

Market Leaders >>>> Overcome by bigger players >>> unable to keep up >>> become minor player >>> live off of IP and fade away.
