Either sideloading ancient Android APKs, or, if the bar file is available, sideloading native apps. Until the development signing infrastructure gets put out of its misery and the latter goes away anyway.
BlackBerry World will be shut down so you won't have that resource. Some devs and other individuals MAY create a method to download a few apps but we don't really know for sure if that will happen. If I were you, I would look at the worst case scenario in that nothing will be available anywhere and plan for a backup of the apps you need and have now.
You need more coffee in the morning. Lol! Always a few seconds behind.
Haha - I was just making coffee and checking CB. Also just got out of bed!
BB10 is not like the much-more-open ecosystems of mobile OSs that have been retired in the past - all of the extra levels of security means that you can't just start a new app store and copy apps into it. BB designed the whole system around their own servers and services - with little room for alternatives - so when those servers and services go away, it's going to be a much more difficult situation.
Essentially, you're going to have to count on developers to make their apps available on their own websites, and as far as updating those apps, as thurask points out, even that is dependent on BB's infrastructure which allows Devs to sign their apps - without which, you can't install an app on your phone.
Obviously the Android runtime gives some options, but of course the older versions of a lot of apps that still run on the 4.3 runtime in BB10 are no longer being supported by the services they connect to, and that will only become more common as time goes on and minimum Android versions go up and up. Of course, most completely standalone apps, such as a calculator, won't be affected, but anything that connects to an online service are likely to be sooner or later.
Hey neko,
While you won't be able to download native apps from Blackberry World anymore, there are efforts to secure .bar files (some of which devs have already released) that you can reinstall if needed. Android APKs will not be affected and can be installed in the same way they can now.
One other note--the core Blackberry system apps (Hub, BBM, Remember, etc.) are all contained within autoloaders and will not be affected by the Blackberry World shutdown.
Additionally, once an app is signed and the .bar file is available the lack of signing infrastructure, should that ever actually happen, will only affect the ability to develop new apps and not already existing ones that you may have archived through .bar files or system backups.
I was under the impression that signing an app was only necessary if you intended to place it on BB World. Are you saying if I got an app developed and installed it on my BB10 device (without signing it), it wouldn't work?
You need to sign the app to compile.
But why? I'm not distributing it. So you're saying a coder can't even create a test app for his BB10 device without signing?
Not as a compiled app on a device, no.
What a joke. So this is basically a form of, "if we go down, you go down with us."
Its not a joke, its a security measure which what the entire OS was built around.
Which is what I have been trying to explain. BB10 is far more dependent on BB support than other OSs in the past that have been able to continue long after the company that created it abandoned it. All of the extra layers of security work against a "community takeover" of support.
Sorry, you're right. It's actually a blunder.
I disagree. You've missed the elephant in the room; since the point you've raised might have been more understandable (although barely acceptable), was it not for the fact that BB10 allows Android apps to be installed willy nilly. So I can create Android apps for BB10 post infrastructure shutdown, but not native apps. Makes no sense - BB10 messed up there big time.
I.e. implementing security measures shouldn't necessitate a prevention of the ability to test apps on one's own BB10 device (especially if not intending to distribute over BBWorld).
Back when the developers were supported, BlackBerry offered an emulator for developers to test prior to signing.
Also, from a security standpoint, the Android runtime is much more isolated from the core OS functions and the kernel compared to real Android. The RT was never intended to be allowed for general use when it was designed. That came later, after developers ignored BB10.

You can install it on your own BB device, but you would need to sign it in order for it to be installable by others. So contrary to many other posts here, you DO NOT need to sign it if you are just going to use it on your own device.
Are you talking about native apps?
What are you using to compile the Apps without needed to sign them?
Let's share names of apps in BlackBerry App World for converting 'em.
I start.
NavFree
Asphalt 8
