Just notice the calculator and compass app appearing in BlackBerry World.
Kind of odd since these were never in BBW and usually pushed in OS updates.

Could BlackBerry be testing out ways to push bars to users instead of OS updates? This could definitely help with updating certain components without an OS update.

Pretty sparse change log, but I like where this is going.

The sparse change log is what makes it suspicious. Why push an insignificant app on BBW when an OS update is just around the corner. Unless of course they are testing something...

So we have the weather, Android runtime, Adobe Reader, maps, BBM, social media apps, cloud storage apps, Docs to Go, Print to Go, Smart Tags and now the calculator and compass in BlackBerry World.

It sure looks like a good way to circumvent carrier control on non-OS updates.

Oddly, after updating my Compass app, it still doesn't seem to work correctly. The pointer rarely finds North, and if it does it's simply by accident.

yes they were listed there. i havent updated them and they are showing in my installed list. i am on the leak though
Were they listed from the beginning though? , because I never saw/noticed it there before, remember the android runtime showed up recently without some even updating it.

Would be really great if BlackBerry could give us what many originally expected of the new BB OS back when it was first announced. A modular and upgradeable without compatibility issues between modules and the core OS.... and no need for carriers beyond radio files.

If this is the way they go - Then Bully for them. A bold and unexpected move from BB. They can update the core OS as well by BAR files - we do, again without relying at all on the carriers to approve. How great would it be to have any number of core OS' on BBW?

Then we might get a change log between incremental updates, finally.

I don't think OS updates would be through BBW. Mainly because carriers wouldn't like that

Think its just a case that these bars are backward compatible so when added to bbw they appear for those still on 10.2.0

Would be nice to get more updates through BBW instead of full OS update – BB10 already seems to be quite modular when you look at the bar update files you can get through Sachesi and all the other apps

I sure hope this is the beginning of a trend from BB. It would make fixing small issues easier without having to roll out a full os. Kudos to them.

Could also just be a matter of prepping the system for 10.2.1. Maybe these minor updates are necessary for a smooth installation..

Not that surprising since we already seen them update the Android Player through BBW once before as well. So, we know they are capable of updating parts of the OS through BBW. However, I don't want to see a long list of apps to have to update so if they are going to bypass carriers, I'd prefer that they had the balls to just do it through one OS update instead of lots of minor updates.

I think you're missing the point. They could fix bugs and add features to apps in the same way that third party developers do, giving us constant improvements, not just once every four months
