If it's important to you, it's probably worth the risk that it suddenly breaks one day.
whats the risk if it suddenly breaks one day? so someone steals the phone, and I am unable to track it? or no one steals the phone, I have protect enabled, it breaks, and does not allow me to re-format or.....?

When the BBID infrastructure went down briefly a couple of times last year, people couldn't get past the setup screen after wiping their devices or reloading their OS. That is the danger. One also needs the infrastructure in order to disable Protect - so it would be a catch-22.
Tangential, but noteworthy: without BBID, backups made with Link/Sachesi/DBBT become useless.

Seriously?!? I doubt it.....
If it's simply being retired, maybe.
But the more likely event is that something breaks and they decide not to fix it.
BB has a history of late or no announcements of stuff breaking. Don't expect any advanced notice. The entire platform is now OFFICIALLY beyond End Of Life, so you are using it completely at your own risk, and BB has no obligation to make any further announcements - though if they KNOW in advance that something will change, they may do so anyway.
As conite said, the more likely scenario is that something breaks and they decide it isn't worth the hassle or cost to fix.
Any idea of how many active BB10 and BBOS users right now?
Personally, my 90% confidence interval is between 100k and 200k of each - ignoring everyone that still has active devices they play with.

Again... that's if BlackBerry decides to make the decision first. But if something goes bad - certificates expire or something else crashes or corrupts it - and shuts it down first...
My view is keep you dated backed up in an open format... or better synced. Hope for the best, but be ready for the worst.
None of those customers generate revenue. As a matter of fact, they only cost BlackBerry money.
Keep in mind too that all BBOS and likely all BB10 devices in the US are going to be obsoleted by cellular network changes within the next 6 months or so. BBOS is certainly going to be unusable with 3G networks gone, but if, as seems almost certain, that VoLTE won't be supported on BB10 phones, they won't be able to make or receive calls.
Those events will likely reduce the number of active devices by half or more, which in turn makes it easier to justify ending services to support them.

It's not like this progression is any surprise - we've seen it happen several times before and it's very predictable.
WebOS had some rabidly hardcore fans who were deeply committed to keeping it alive - but how many active WebOS devices are there? How many WinPhones? How many Symbian phones? Each platform had die-hard fans, but even they eventually moved on - and a LOT of them regretted not having moved on much earlier, once they realized just how much they'd been missing out on by clinging to their old platform. That's not everyone of course - a few people have a use case that BB10 solves better than anything else and other things are a low priority for them, but such people are few and far between.

Hopefully there will always be a non-android qwerty available for the very few users who can't txt on a slab.
Email, talk, txt/mms, WhatsApp/viber (for international calls), camera, calender, calculator, and basic web browsing - those are the basics for 2020 + a few more years ......just send this out into the universe (and BlackBerry mobile/limited)

Well it was a pretty cheap PKB.... ;)
But that's the real problem, not all PKB lovers want the same thing.... no single PKB device is going to fill the needs of all or the price point they'd be willing to buy for. Many today that love the Passport, only as a $150 or $200 phone....
