I realize that some of what is being referred to is BBM and Pin messaging, which is a real black eye for BlackBerry, but it doesn't affect me. But on BB10, is it similarly unsecure?

Phone, email and text messages are already out in the open.
BBM messages, as stated in the article (non corporate) are accessible by BlackBerry, and BlackBerry is willing to work with authorities.
So it depends on what portion of security you want to "pick at". A BlackBerry is very secure if it's locked and password protected. And a BlackBerry can be very secure if you pay for additional features.... BBM Protected, BES and even Securesmart options.
If you feel you need that level of security... you need to really dig into what is and isn't secure about each platform.
I'm not concerned that I need privacy or security. I just think that privacy is an important constitutional right and I wouldn't want to support a company that puts their customers privacy last. I suppose it's no different with Apple or Google (both have been caught in collusion with Hillary Clinton's campaign, Eric Schmidt providing voter profiles by spying on Android users).
Is BB10 any different than iOS or Android? Probably just as easy for the NSA to turn on your selfie camera as any other OS? Oh well. I guess there's no choice.

BlackBerry is a special case because of the unique services they can provide through their own servers. For almost every other brand of phone this type of information is available to law enforcement agencies courtesy of the telephone companies. It's not BlackBerry's public "track record" vs Apple's that maters, it's who can access your private communications -- and we know that is a long list.
Yeah the 1st point of concern should be your internet provider(s), I think many here would be very surprised to read the Cable Company and Cell Company privacy rules and TOS.
I read the TOS for My LG television and pretty much they want the same.
Very interesting point. Was this more relevant in the BBOS days with the compressed data courtesy of BlackBerry's servers? It's a fair point that BB10 already has many amazing built-in apps that don't force me to download information-stealing, third-party apps.
