The only way Blackberry loses money is if they try to put out a new BB10 phone. At this time all they are doing is maintaining the BB10 OS, as well as supporting BES customers. They are not wasting money. They have an obligation to support BES and enterprise customers, they will continue to do so for a few years. The only thing they will not do is put out new BB10 phones. So really it's not costing them a lot of money. They will perfect their Android phone line up, as they said they will release a new Android phone later this year as well as put out updates and Bug fixes. Now that's as close you will get to perfecting!
I see you're using logic and rational thinking. Logic is the true enemy of the BB10 hater. Many of the bb10 haters in there's forums are now Priv owners. They hate BB10 to justify the purchase of their over-prived android BlackBerry. Pathetic they are...

now it looks like that BlackBerry is actually going with the time...

By separating there business between PRO and Amateur.
on the Pro side continuing BB OS10 devices like PP+Classic, with strong BES and productive native app's support.
Getting away with Games and crap, concentrating on the essential stuff needed for business and Pro folks.
On the other hand BlackBerry now supporting the Amateur and lower consumer interests, namely the Toyshop with Android OS and Games and well let's say dealing with a downgraded system to make all this schoolboy and houswifes with this mainstream entertainment OS folks happy.

All reminds me on the Camera industry in the 80th....
in this days companies like NIKON and CANON always had a PRO-line of cameras and lenses, but had a cheaper Consumer line in place, so that the masses of people could say "hey I'm using a Camera that has a PRO-name" but in reality this cheaper Consumer line did pay for the PRO-line at least allowing the Companies to pay for the development of the PRO-line and keep the Pros happy for there daily needs, which in return gave the image so that the Amateurs spend the money on the crap, living on a illusion.

Now we got BlackBerry with OS10 and BES for the PROs and daily needed high profile devices and the consumer line of a cheap OS with lots of games and crap with a PRIV device that got a image name printed on it.

You have far more Android devices tied to BES (and other EMM solutions) than BB10 ever had.

I understand the preference argument, but the one that says Android is a toy is silly. There are countless business-centric activities you can only do on the Priv.

Most EMM apps, office solutions, collaboration tools, marketing tools, and specialised enterprise apps are only available on the Priv.

My perspective is simple. BB10 will work just fine for the next two years. By then, I fully expect to have a full Windows 10 pro phone available, either as the rumored "Surface Phone" or as a small two in one running a VOIP client.

None of the current mobile OSes can replace a real computer for actual work. They are all just convenient devices for staying in touch when away from a real computer.

That may not be true for pure consumers who enjoy music and media, games and social networking. But it's true in the professional world.

There isn't a single experience I enjoy more on my BB10 phone, Apple iPad or Nexus/Samsung tablets than I do on my laptop.

Don't quite agree, I think BB10 is the better of the four major OS's. It just does not get the support it needed/ needs, for reasons clearly laid out on the forums for years. But even though no announcement has been made I think it will be mostly android OS for BB from here on out with minimal support for BB10 until they say EOL. I wish they they had gone a different route. I would have stopped the handset and completely focused on the OS, in the begining, more like Google, except with a fee. I know they design great handsets, but so do a lot of companies. Sell the OS , right to use the keyboards, and BES servers stay the same. Shoulda woulda coulda, blah blah blah. Now I will go cry myself to sleep....lol

I admit finding exact numbers is difficult. But here's my rational:

As of the Jun 2015 financials, we had 10.8 million BB10 users. How many of those are still using the device as a primary device (and not being played with as a backup or not sitting in drawers - I have 5 myself)? How many have moved on over the last 7 months? Let's say remaining BB10 unique users number somewhere in the 5 to 8 million range.

What percentage of those are actually tied to a BES? I would think 10% would be extremely generous. So that leaves us with under a million BB10 devices on BES.

Now how many Android activations on EMM worldwide right now? Again, hard to say. We do know that BES has been downloaded 5-10 million times on Google Play. Citrix Receiver has been downloaded 5-10 million times. Airwatch, SAP, Good, and MobileIron have had 1-5 million downloads each. And this only represents about half of the EMM solutions that are out there.

There are EMM websites declaring various percentages of Android activations (compared to the more popular Apple). Good's stats are that 26% of its activations are Android. There is no reason to believe this number would vary wildly in the 90% portion of the EMM market that is not BES.

Even taken with a grain of salt, the numbers appear much, much more that the 500,000 to 800,000 BB10 activations from above. And we certainly know the trend lines for Android in the workplace!

To the second point, I'm not going to start listing the myriad industry-specific apps and collaboration tools that are only available from iOS and Google Play. Countless websites can provide that information.

I spent a lot of time researching financial statements, EMM metrics from solution providers, and other source material.

As the specific numbers are not publicly available, one has to make reasonable assumptions and avail themselves of facts and figures from multiple sources.

I am fairly confident that I have the big pieces right, but would love to look at your research as well. Any other information you have could prove useful.

Beauty of BES is that it secures all platforms.
Reality is that there is a very small # of us out there who solely have 1 BlackBerry device. Most people either carry 2 devices, or have their own ios or android.

    Yes. This.
I went out and bought a (fire sale?) Leap for $149 at Best Buy this week because I love BB10. I love the UI/gestures INFINITELY more than any other OS. I also bought it precisely because I also have an Iphone 5c activated on a free plan with RingPlus.
I use the Leap as my primary device. The iPhone is my parachute. Not my first choice - but usable, and sometimes essential - in a pinch.

I am not a BB shareholder. BB going Android means I really don't care if BB lives or dies any more. There are tons of options on Android, and I'm just not into physical keyboards.

I understand that BB, as a company, is not all about handsets. However, handsets has always been my only interest in BB. When it comes to handsets, BB - as just another Android vendor - doesn't bring enough differentiation for me to care.

As someone else aptly expressed - if BB10 was a party, they have turned off the music, and turned up the lights, and now they just wish we would leave so they can clean up the mess.

Now they are not accepting "Built for BlackBerry" submissions. Soon they will stop accepting BBW submissions at all. They are begrudgingly doing what little they have to for existing large contracts.

After Playbook, and now BB10 - with the way they handled both, the development and the dismantling - with horrible comunication, I don't have much faith or trust left in the company. I think it is likely they will lose interest in Priv and handsets in general and just let it whither when they do. It is their "M.O.".

I have an INTEREST in BB because of my years with their products and because I find the situation somewhat interesting from a business standpoint (although becoming less interesting). As a company, they left me with little to CARE about at this point though.

A year ago the Passport was as useful as it is today. The ecosystem is as useless today as it was a year ago. This reminds me of my 9900 that I purchased in 2011. I managed to get two years with it but others still use the device today.

Two years from now you may decide to buy a Vienna or just move on to an all touch device.

How has your situation changed in a year? How has BB's? A year ago, BB was in much the same situation it is now. I'm sorry, but you knew - or should've known - that the company's future was bleak. It's BEEN bleak for far longer than a year.

If your phone functions similarly to the way it did when you removed it from its box, or as well as a year + old device normally functions, I can't see why you are angry.

I think that is hyperbole at its best - or worst.

Two questions: Were you actually ignorant of Blackberry's troubles at the time you purchased your phone? When you purchase any phone, do you expect the manufacturer to provide you with software upgrades/enhancements beyond those that were available the day you purchased it?

I have a 2013 Chevy Spark. Basic little car with a touch screen entertainment system. The Sparks are now offered with entertainment systems with WiFi availability - my car doesn't have that functionality. Is Chevy obligated to continue to UPGRADE the software and systems in my car, even though those features weren't available when I purchased? I think not. They're obligated to make sure my car functions for the duration of the time it's under warranty - and obligated to fix any safety recalls (analogous to security updates). Beyond that? I have the choice to continue to use my older, but still functional automobile - or sell it and upgrade to the next model.

You don't need a prospectus or hire an investigator to know that BlackBerry is struggling as a handset maker. Isn't that the general consumer belief as we have heard endlessly over the past few years? I thought that there were too many doom and gloom articles and carrier sales people claiming the BlackBerry was already going out of the smartphone business. If you chose to disregard that and put your faith in this company then your beef should with the general Crackberrian sentiment which is overly optimistic and generally intolerant of naysayers.

This sounds like what lawyers advise you to say during legal depositions: "Did you not know that the dead tree on your property would eventually become a significant hazard?" "Well, I'm not an arborist so how could I have known that it was dead?"

If you got your product information from BlackBerry.com then I'm sure that company will maintain that the official product support for BlackBerry 10 handsets is ongoing. You have two OS updates coming this year so you are fully supported. I'll bet that nowhere on BlackBerry.com does it say that the Passport is the flagship handset and that more BlackBerry 10 devices will be coming for years to come.
