Aside from a handful of engineering samples in Waterloo, and perhaps the Dev Alpha's (Mine said Made in Canada). I don't think RIM has actually BUILT any devices from in house. Certainly not the models that went into production after their testing.
They are not. They are doing so to reduce the cost of developing hardware as much as possible. We can leave the best quality stuff behind and start to live the same standard that most people do. I won't mind that they let TCL do the design and the manufacturing work. I won't buy one any way.

There's no viable reason to do so. Manufacturing costs a lot with very minimal returns. Outsourcing it to OEM makes sense if the design is good, and manufacturer is chosen rightly.
Most IT brands do it to earn on the margin they need/want.
It makes sense.
